How to find your own Animal Guide Totem

First of all, it is especially important for you to remember it is not you that chooses your spirit guide animal, it is the animal that chooses you!

Here are some of the most common ways to find your animal guide totem:

Spend more time in nature, take off your headphones, put your phone away and really appreciate Mother Nature and her cornucopia of wondrous gifts. Take special notice of the animal's birds, even insects that you may come across are you drawn to one animal, does it catch your attention?

Begin to take more notice of the animals in your life, look for unusual behaviors, this could be a spirit animal trying to gain your attention.

Do you encounter an animal on a regular basis this can be physical or symbolic, for example did your attention get grabbed by an animal poster, advert, book or similar – you then went on to see this animal say tattooed on someone, later you switch on the TV and there it is again on the screen…and so on.

Have you recently read a book or thumbed through a magazine and one animal stands out for you, it catches your attention and so on...

Start to make notes of any animals that appear in your dreams, is there a regular animal you dream about?

The next most common way to find your animal guide totem is through visualization or meditation. Using visualization or meditation is a terrific way to connect meditation with your animal spirit.

Using visualization or meditation allows you to enter a different state of mind or altered state where you are more receptive to the energy and intuitive wisdom of the animal spirits.

Once you have determined which spirit guide totem you have learn as much as you can about this animal, observe it, even read about it. Make yourself a list of the animal’s attributes then consider how these animals’ traits relate to you, do not try too hard to produce similarities; these should come to you without pressure.

Now consider how the animals may relate to you right now – for example: Let us say your spirit animal was the butterfly - The butterfly represents change and transformation. So please now consider the Butterfly and how it will go through changes - From egg to larvae (caterpillar), to pupa (the chrysalis or cocoon) and from the cocoon to the butterfly emerging in splendor and glory. This butterfly leaves behind the safety of their cocoon to discover a new world, she entrusts without fear her newly developed wings and takes to flight.

The Butterfly knows exactly when to leave the safety and limitation of its cocoon, flying freely into the world. As humans we are not so certain and can hesitate, delay, or miss opportunities.
The message therefore being: The cocoon of your thoughts is safe and familiar – the cocoon therefore represents your thoughts and fears which may be limiting your advancement. In other words, do not be afraid of moving forward and looking outside of your cocoon, this may help free you of the restrictions and fears of your thoughts.

The butterfly is symbolic of the changes happening in your life, each equally as important. It is no good rushing to a certain stage, nor is it good to become stuck. Change is necessary sometimes and can be good - even though it may not seem so at the time. Change is what life is made of and is essential for progression, endings, growth, and achievement.

The butterfly implies therefore that changes will be significant. More than just changes in your environment, the transformations that this butterfly points to are also internal: Your own opinions, aspects of your personality, or personal habits. Personal transformation is symbolic of the butterfly representation.

The butterfly is typically colorful thus bringing the message to lighten up, add more color to your life and express yourself more fully.

Do you see what I mean by the trait of the animal or in this case insect and how they can relate back to you.
