Sagittarius Birthstone -Topaz

Nov 20, 2016

Sagittarius people are joyful and highly inquisitive. Several gemstones have been recognized as birthstones for this sign. These birthstones act as charms or lucky stones
to give the inquisitive Archer the depth of thought and courage to accept the truth.

Topaz
Topaz is the traditional birthstone for Sagittarius. This birthstone is also the traditional birthstone for the month of November by the ancients — Hebrew, Arabic, Italian, Polish, Roman, Russian and Indian (Ayurvedic) — and remains the November birthstone in modern Western gemology. The Sagittarius gemstone is also the birthstone for December in the contemporary Hindu calendar. Furthermore, topaz, being the stone associated with the zodiac sign’s ruling planet, Jupiter, is the planetary stone for Sagittarius. Indeed, some records exist that identify topaz as the gemstone for Sagittarius.

In the Middle Ages, the name topaz used to apply to any yellow gemstones, including citrine. Today, however, topaz refers to a group of transparent silicate minerals, which occur, not only as yellow stones, but also orange, red and even blue. The variety of topaz traditionally identified as the birthstone for Sagittarius is the golden or yellow topaz. This stone, yellow and clear, embodies optimism, which in Sagittarius-born people can be boundless. Besides bringing in growth and prosperity, this stone is also believed to increase strength, improve eyesight, and protect its wearer from injury.

Peridot
While tradition designates topaz as the birthstone for Sagittarius, the topaz of the ancients was not actually the true topaz, but peridot. Named after the island whence it came, topaz, or topazius, is described by 1st century writers as a greenish gemstone from the island of Topazos in the Red Sea. This description perfectly fits peridot, a green gemstone extracted from Topazos, now known as St. John’s Island, which remains an important source of rough peridot to this day.

Called the “gem of the sun,” peridot is believed to chase away bad thoughts to the point that the person wearing it is never suspected of evil doings. An enemy of natural fear, the Sagittarius birthstone renders its wearer optimistic, gracious and friendly. Peridot indeed echoes the fiery qualities of the good-natured Sagittarius, and sustains the virtues of the zodiac sign, keeping the Sagittarian good, trusty and sociable.

Turquoise
Turquoise is the traditional Polish and Russian birthstone for the month of December, and remains the December birthstone in modern Western gemology. This Sagittarius birthstone is a rare opaque gemstone ranging in color from blue to blue-green to green. This Sagittarius stone is said to bring clarity of mind and spiritual discernment: qualities that would not go to waste with Sagittarius people who are disposed venture into the unknown.

Amethyst
Amethyst is a birthstone for Sagittarius in Western astrology. This Sagittarius birthstone is the violet variety of quartz, and ranges in shade from lavender to purple. The amethyst is believed to bring self-awareness and self-possession, making the gemstone handy for Sagittarians who are disposed to throw themselves into the unknown. This is the Stone of Awareness.

Agate
Agate, specifically Brazilian agate, is also a Sagittarius birthstone in Indian astrology. Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony. Brazilian agates are brown stones which are interspersed with white and gray bands. This gemstone is believed to bring the Sagittarius person courage in his endeavors as well as the strength to accept his fate. : This is the Stone of Prudence.

Sodalite
Sodalite is another Sagittarius birthstone in Hindu astrology. This stone is a gemstone of a rich royal blue color available in opaque stones as well as translucent and transparent crystals. Like other lucky stones for Sagittarius, sodalite is held to deepen thoughts and spiritual awareness, as well as boost courage. This is the Stone of Clarity.

Beryl
Beryl is the talismanic stone for Sagittarius. A talisman is an amulet or other piece of jewelry believed to give its wearer magical powers. A Sagittarius talisman can be engraved on beryl, a brilliant transparent gem that comes in all colors except green, which is called emerald. This birthstone is believed to bring cheerfulness, keep youthfulness, and chase away laziness. Berylis also thought to enhance sympathy and sincerity.

Other Sagittarius Stones
Ruby and sapphire have been identified as birthstones for Sagittarius. However, sapphire is associated closely with Taurus. Likewise, while ruby as birthstone is echoed in the ancient texts for the same period when Sagittarius people are born (specifically in December), this precious stone rivals with topaz (November birthstone) in the very same texts, and topaz has been recognized as primarily the Sagittarius birthstone.

There are other gemstones out there that contemporary people say are gemstones for Sagittarius. It is up to you to decide if these gemstones are indeed Sagittarius birthstones. The modern Sagittarius gemstones include blue topaz, white topaz, yellow sapphire, zircon, labradorite, lapis lazuli, vesuvianite, idocrase, azurite, blue lace agate, charoite, dioptase, malachite, merlinite, snowflake obsidian, pink tourmaline and sugilite.
