Then after realizing the mistake and unnecessary anger, Dionysus shed blood-red wine tears of repentance which soaked into the glittering pale white stone and gave it a gentle purple hue.

Crystal powerhouse Amethyst is the most valuable crystal in the quartz family. Its chemical classification is silicon dioxide (SIO2). Other famous Quartz varieties include Citrine, Prasiolite, Smokey Quartz, Rose Quartz, Onyx, Agate, and Jasper.
The lovely purple of Amethyst comes from iron oxide in the quartz, irradiation, and trace/transition metals. Amethyst has more iron (Fe2O3) than any other variety of quartz, and experts believe that its color arises from its iron content.
It is a hard, durable gemstone measuring 7 on the Mohs scale. In its rough state, Amethyst often forms in long prismatic crystals, making it ideal for cutting.
