Lapis Lazuli is a stone of royalty and nobility; and is considered a stone of truth.

Lapis Lazuli is most often referred to as Lapis - the Latin word ‘lapis’ meaning ‘stone’ and the Persian ‘lazhward’ meaning ‘blue’ and is semitranslucent to opaque, with a waxy to vitreous luster. The color meaning of lapis lazuli is also used in various languages including Spanish and Portuguese Azul.

It is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the fusion of lazurite (sometimes referred to as Hauyne), calcite and pyrite minerals. The gold flecks in lapis lazuli are created by pyrite, which is incredibly attractive and will not lower the price of the gemstone unlike white streaks caused by calcite. Sometimes, Lapis can also contain any of the following: diopside, amphibole, feldspar, and mica.

Lapis is known as dark blue but can also be found in other shades of blue, and even other hues. The color of lapis can range from a deep violet blue, royal blue to light blue, turquoise blue, right through to a greenish blue. This is due to the combination of different minerals in the aggregate.

To be classified as Lapis Lazuli the rock must have a distinctive blue color and contain at least 25% blue Lazurite.
However, there are a couple of sub-varieties of Lapis Lazuli which have different trade names:
  • Chilean Lapis which has more white calcite streaks and less golden pyrite
  • Denim Lapis a lighter colored gemstone close in color to faded jeans.

Lapis Lazuli was a treasured gemstone by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. History shows that Lapis Lazuli was being mined as far back and the seventh millennium BC, in the Sar-i Sang mines, in Shortugai, as well as in other mines in Badakhshan province in northeast Afghanistan, which today still produce the finest Lapis Lazuli.

Lapis beads have been found at Neolithic burials in Mehrgarh, Caucasus, and Mauritania, as well as on the death mask of King Tutankhamun (1341–1323 BC), where they inlaid it with turquoise and carnelian in bright gold.

Many bible scholars believe the spiritual meaning of lapis lazuli is referenced in the Old Testament as "sapphire" which they believe indicate lapis lazuli.

It is also said that Michelangelo used lapis lazuli in powder form to color the frescoes in his Sistine Chapel!
In modern times Lapis is also sourced in Chile and Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. Minor sources are Angola, Canada, Colorado (US), and Pakistan.
