Fate: The Cop Job

Fate sometimes has things in mind for us that we don't. Sometimes what happens has never entered our minds, but I have found if a door opens don't automatially slam it shut until you have at least thought about it, maybe take a peek? There are times when just realizing that the universe sends us things we are supposed to go through is enough for us to step through the portal, but nothing says we can't use common sense and have other doors open, just in case...

Anyone who is good with people, honest and friendly, and who has at least some physical coordination can find work. You have to be open to ideas, willing to learn, and know that fate sometimes has things in its mind that never once crossed yours.

I had left my job because of the manager's attitude. Sometimes that's a good excuse to leave something you might be tired of, but the fact is, I had two kids to raise, was living with my best friend who moved us into her house full of her 4 kids, husband, a dog, a cat and a big aquarium full of what she said were fish. And I needed a new job, quickly! I knew I could find a job bartending but had to find the right place at the right time so one evening I drove about a half hour to the next town and started scouting bars and restaurants, stopping to leave my resume, sit and chat with bosses and owners letting them know I was a good bet. I never was much of a drinker but a few of the places I went into insisted I sit and visit and 'have a drink'. So, I did. Not many, but I did feel a bit more relaxed than usual. I was not drunk, but I did have a few so when the time came to drive home I took it easy.

I was less than a block from home when I saw the flashing red lights in my rearview mirror. I turned into the street I lived on, pulled up in front of the house. The cop had turned off his lights and pulled in front of me, so I got out and stood in front of my car, smiling, saying hi there, being as sober appearing as I could. It was cold. I had a nice dress on but no jacket, so when my huge, warm puffy cat came up to me I picked him up to cuddle with. The cop stood there, he started to laugh, and said: "Have you been drinking?" I said: "I had a few drinks earlier tonight, but I guess the answer is yes? I am looking for a job and you know how that goes".. He said: "looking for a job?" I nodded. He said, " stay right there, do not move!" He got back into his patrol car, turned the lights on, and drove away fast. I was standing there in a dark fall night, in a dress, holding a cat thinking I would stand there all night if that is what it took to keep me out of the clink, but what the heck is going on!?

About 10 minutes later the cop came back, got out of the car, handed me a handful of papers and said: "Fill these out and be at the Police station at 8:30 tomorrow morning!" He got back in his car, turned the lights on and drove off. I stood there trying to figure out what had just happened, then went in the house, put the cat in his box, laid the papers on the desk, and headed upstairs to bed. It had been a long day. After a few hours of sleep I heard my friend standing at the bottom of the stairs screaming my name! "What the hell is this??" she yelled! I staggered to the top of the stairs and said: "can you not yell? I have a headache". She bellowed again but this time waving the handful of papers I had left on her desk: "What the hell is this"? I stumbled down the stairs and said: " I have no idea, I was stopped by a cop when I got home last night, and he told me to fill them out this morning". She said: "It's a JOB Application!" I could not believe my eyes. It was a very long, detailed application as a Police Matron. What the heck is a Matron? I had no clue but decided if it meant I was not going to be arrested for being behind the wheel with some booze in my body, I would apply for anything they suggested.

Okay I admit, I was hung over, my eyes were not working right, but I drank cup after cup of the coffee my friend brought me as I sat at the desk and filled out the papers. A half hour later, clean, dressed and high on coffee, I walked into the police office to apply for a job I had no idea existed. And, I got the job. Got the job? Yes, I had zero knowledge about police work, zero experience, never been inside a police department, but they gave me the job. I will say this is just the begining of a long amazing story. I had experiences I could have never imagined and will share one of these days, but the point of this story so far is never forget that fate has something for all of us to do. Be okay with that.

I never drank and drove again, how do we know that in itself did not save someone's life? I learned how to help people, a life lesson I use to this day. We should all know there are times when fate has something in mind; and there are times to just get up, get dressed, and do what you can to get it done..
