Today, typically crystal balls are mainly used by Fortune tellers of the Roma Gypsy Culture. But going back in history we first come across the crystal ball being used by the ancient Druids in a practice called scrying - a world derived from descry, which means to perceive. Druids did not limit their divination to crystals; pools of water, mirrors or reflective glass were also used.
The crystal ball is also called an orbuculum or a crystal sphere. They are mostly clear but do also come in assorted colors.
Mainly living in the UK and France during the Iron Age the Druids were a class of highly respected, educated people that practiced a range of disciplines including religious rites, teaching, medicine, poetry, and lawmaking.
Druid is a Celtic term meaning “knowing the oak tree” which possibly came about because the Druids were known to perform rituals in ‘oak forests.’
We see from ‘The Natural History’ by Roman-era naturalist and historian Pliny the Elder said that Druids “used balls" to foretell the future. Julius Caesar also described Druid superstitious practices in his oral histories of the Gallic Wars.
St. Augustine condemned the practice of soothsaying (scrying) with crystal balls in his “The City of God” during the 5th Century, as going against the teachings of Christianity. He said that using crystal balls was a way to become “entangled in the deceptive rites of demons who masquerade under the names of angels.”
History then shows during the Renaissance academics were using scrying as a logical scientific practice, as detailed by the Arabic writer Picatrix. From this European scholars began re-looking at the practice of scrying, and it saw a jump in popularity.
The Roma people arrived in Europe sometime between the 9th and 14th Century, there way of living and beliefs put them at odds with the Catholic Church, who believed fortune telling was being used as a means of gaining income instead of getting a proper job!
Even though the art of crystal ball reading continued to be criticized by the Church, it did eventually find its way into the hands of John Dee, an alchemist and mathematician, who happened to be one of Queen Elizabeth 1 close advisors. The Queen relied on Dee’s counsel when organizing events and matters of astrology.
Dee had an acquaintance Edward Kelley, with whom he would regularly hold scrying sessions where they would stare into an obsidian mirror in the hopes of communicating with angels to gain otherworldly wisdom.
In more recent times during the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s Jeanne Dixon shot to fame when she predicted the assassination of John F. Kennedy with her crystal ball.
