A Beginners Guide to Working with Herbs

Jun 17, 2023

Herbalism (also known as herbology or botanical medicine) is the practice of using plants for medicinal or therapeutic uses. It is not only witches that use herbs and plants for healing, nowadays it is widespread practice in many alternative medicines. For example, Eucalyptus can be used for a sore throat and coffee beans for a headache.

ALL herbs are magical, but not all should be used for medicine and/or food, because some are toxic.

Herbs can be used in many ways including teas, tinctures, ointments and in herbal baths to name but a few.

Many Wiccans, Pagans, Magicians, and Conjurers use herbs.

Wiccans use herbs not just for their medicinal properties, but for their magical uses as well, because herbs hold the Earth’s energy in them. They use this energy in spell work.

Each herb and root have a medicinal and a magical property of some description. Each one according to the Doctrine of Signatures shows its properties by its form, shape, and spirit.

Dried herbs are useful in spells, teas and to bathe in. You can dry herbs yourself by hanging them upside down in small bunches, making sure that the air is able to circulate around them. If you cannot grow or find herbs in the wild, then you can purchase them in many shops and supermarkets.

Growing your own herbs is an effective way of having access to fresh herbs. No garden? No problem, you can still grow herbs on a balcony or windowsill. Depending on the type, several different varieties of herbs can be grown in the same pot, such as rosemary and lavender. Harvest herbs in the morning before the heat of the day sets in.

Plant magic or plant magick is an age-old tradition dating back to ancient Egyptian times, when thyme, lavender, and peppermint were used in mummification practices because of their clean scents and skin-moisturizing oils.

One way to enhance any spell is to sprinkle specific herbs into the flame of a candle during your ritual, this will add extra power to your spells.

If you want to remove negative energies from your home, leave tiny amounts of herbs dotted about. Not only will this remove negative energy, it will also offer protection, bring happiness, promote good health, and bring a peaceful energy to your home.

Many people carry a charm bag with a variety of herbs in it, this is used for protection or to attract love.
