The Triple Goddess.

Sep 12, 2016

The Triple Goddess of fate was first found in Greece, then in the Germanic tribes with almost identical myths.

In Greece, the 3 sisters of fate were the Moerae. The Greeks called them Klotho, Lachesis, Atropos. , In Germanic people, it was the Norns (the wyrd sisters), Yerd, Verdandi, Skuld, a.k.a. Wyrd, Werthende and Skould.

The Moerae ruled over streams and fountains, The Norns the fountain of Wyrd, the source of life from which the great ash tree of Yggdrasill drew it's strength.

The sisters spun the threads of life then cut it, bringing the person's time to an end. In Greek mythology, Klotho (the youngest) put the wool on the spindle, Lachesis (the middle sister) spun it, and Atropos (the eldest) cut it off.

In Germanic lore, Skuld (the youngest) cut the thread, Yerd (the eldest) wrapped the wool, and Verdandi (the middle sister) spun it. These traditions of weaving, planting, knotting are governed by women under the power of the fates.

The Moerae are associated with birth, life and death; past, present and future; beginning, middle and end. They are the Moon; waxing, full and waning.

In Rome they are known as the Fata or Parcae, in Germany are the Norns, in the Baltic are the Laima, within the Celts, it is Brigid (around 700 B.C.). They hold power over the highest of Gods.

Thru the Mediterranean we also find bird deities, the bird Goddess is symbolized always with 3 lines above or below in drawings and representations. Within Egyptian culture, the Gods and Goddesses would have animal and bird heads. The vulture was most common. In Greek myths, Athena would change into a dove as well as associate with an owl. The Celtic animal association in Ireland, would be the Badh (crow).

Within the Greek pantheon, Sirens and Harpies are female forms and birds of prey. They have human heads, feet of the vulture, and appear in groups of 3. They are known for luring through song and bring death. They are known as the Kears (fates of death).

Neolithic Goddesses often appear in folktales as birds. They are the bird Goddesses, life giving of fate or fairy, they can also bring luck and wealth as a duck, swan or ram. As a cuckoo, She brings prophecies, as the primeval mother, She comes as the supernatural deer or bear, associated with Diana. Hera associates with the dove, The Baltic Goddess of fate, Laima also is associated with the cuckoo or a dove. Being the Goddesses of fate, they now are associated with omens and signs when certain birds are around us.
