What you need to know about today, National Coloring Book Day

Coloring for fun.com asks us "Do you know that today is National Coloring Book Day?" Yes, someone created a holiday just for coloring books. National Coloring Book Day is now celebrated annually on August 2.

It's well known that coloring books have always been popular with children, but many weren't aware that they were becoming popular with adults until some adults brought home a coloring book. Well, the truth is that they didn't bring home just one coloring book, they brought home boxes of coloring books…and markers…and pencils… and stuff.

If you are reading this article, you probably have a stash of coloring books and stuff too.

No one realized how big adult coloring had become until enough people got involved. The adult coloring market barely existed six months ago, and now most of the major book publishers are producing titles targeted to adults who color.

Adult coloring is now a huge trend and many are finding that it is not only fun, but also a great way to reduce stress. Adult coloring books are becoming an international trend. Amazon now lists 1,215 titles in the coloring for grown-ups section, and some coloring books published in the U.K. have sold millions of copies, the Guardian reports.

To celebrate National Coloring Book Day, here are some quotes from some well-known adult coloring book authors.

National Coloring Book Day Quotes

Marjorie Sarnat– Marjorie is the author of the #1 Best Seller, Creative Cats. Marjorie said, “As a coloring book artist I enjoy delighting the colorist with beautiful and detailed themes on each and every page. Each drawing displays a profusion of patterns and fanciful settings for the colorist to bring to life. I hope that the experience of coloring my artwork is relaxing, fun, and helps release everyday stress.”

Johanna Basford – Johanna is the author of two of the best-selling adult coloring books. Her books have sold over a million copies and Enchanted Forest is an Amazon Bestseller. Johanna says, “You don't have to sit down with a blank sheet of paper or, you know, have that scary moment of thinking, ‘What can I draw?’ The outlines are already there for you, so it’s just something that you can do quietly for a couple of hours that, you know, is hand-held and analog and quiet.”

Millie Marotta – Millie the author of the Animal Kingdom series. She says that, “Because of the intricate style of my drawings people find them quite interesting and perhaps a little more captivating than your traditional coloring book. This is why I would say they are so well suited to adults and have proved so popular in that area of the market.”
