In this fantastic list from gaygardner.com we find a August gardening to-do list that can be used by just about anyone!

• As Phlox blooms fade, remove spent flower heads to prevent seeding, and fertilize for fall bloom.
• Bleeding Hearts, Doronicums, and Lupines can be transplanted this month.
• Check tall Bearded Iris for borers.
• Crops that remain in the ground, such as Swiss Chard and Parsnips should be top dressed with fertilizer.
• Cut any Raspberry and Blackberry canes that have fruited this year.
• Divide Oriental Poppies and Daylilies.
• Do not apply fertilizer to Roses or broadleaved evergreens this late in the season.
• Don't push yourself these lazy days of summer, save some enthusiasm for gardening work next month
• Examine the underside of Azalea, Laurel and Rhododendron leaves for any signs of insects.
• Gather up and burn any diseased Hollyhock leaves.
• If you are going for big Dahlia flowers, disbud the plants.
• It is best to divide Japanese Iris now, rather than wait until later.
• Keep an eye on Cabbage and other green vegetables for leaf-eating insects, spray or pick off any that are spotted.
• Keep cuttings of Holly, Azaleas and Abelia cool and shaded until rooted.
• Keep flats of seedlings well watered, do not allow them to dry out.
• Last call to sow leaf lettuce for a late crop.
• Late crops of Peas, Spinach, Radishes and Turnips can still be sown.
• Lawns can be seeded with the approach of fall's cooler days.
• Order peonies now for fall planting.
• Pick and burn all Rose leaves affected by Black Spot and Yellow Leaf.
• Plant autumn Crocus bulbs as soon as they arrive.
• Plant Pansy, Forget-me-nots and English Daisy seeds now for next spring's flowers.
• Prepare Narcissus planting areas now so that bulbs can be planted as soon as they arrive.
• Prevent crabgrass from going to seed by raking it up before cutting.
• Purchase grass seed for repairing existing lawns, or planting new ones.
• Remove bottom foliage from cut Dahlias, to help them last longer.
• Ripe Delphinium seed planted now will produce plants large enough to over-winter in cold frames.
• Rooted cuttings can be transplanted when new leaves start to appear.
• Round out the month by giving evergreen hedges their last shearing.
• Spray now to control second brood of Euonymus scale on Pachysandra and shrubs.
• Spray Peach trees after gathering this years crop to keep foliage diseases in check.
• Stake hardy Chrysanthemums.
• Take cuttings of bedding plants such as Geraniums and Coleus.
• Take time to relax under a shade tree if you gardened well this year.
• Thin perennial seedlings that were sown last month.
• Transplant Lilies after the foliage has died down.
• Use Sevin to control second brood of chinch bugs on lawn.
