[1ω1 and ω2 Scorpii share the name Jabhat al Akrab, from the Arabic جبهة العقرب (jabhat[u] al-caqrab), “forehead of the scorpion”. β1 Scorpii is named Acrab, from the Arabic العقرب (al-‘Aqrab), “the Scorpion”. It also has the Latin name Graffias, “the claws”.
According to Ptolemy, “The bright stars in the front of the body of Scorpio have an effect similar to that produced by the influence of Mars, and partly to that produced by Saturn” (malicious, thieving, merciless, fiendish, repulsive, liar, accidents, violent death.)
Fixed star Acrab causes extreme malevolence, mercilessness, fiendishness, repulsiveness, malice, theft, crime, pestilence, and contagious diseases.
Acrab gives the ability to do research, especially into things of a particularly secret and hidden nature. In lower types, however, a tendency to falsehood and treason can be noted. Acrab is a poor augury for material wealth. There will be difficulties, impediments, or loss.
Mars-Saturn is not a very delightful combination, yet one which makes a certain sense when we remember that a scorpion’s armament is at the rear, not in the head where this star is. It is in fact a fighter of very great skill, and that characterizes Mars-Saturn perfectly. Acrab shows a patient and wary approach to any situation, but this will belie the skilled determination which will then be brought to bear.
