Moments That Count

Most of life is retrospect.  When we look back we see the things that affected us most, we also see there is no way to know how important a seemingly minor moment will be in someone\s future.  That's the useful part of looking at the past, it helps us know what seemingly insignificant things make a difference. Maybe it helps us know what to use to teach others.  Maybe one tiny moment in our past made a huge difference to our entire life and we use that moment to help others without knowing if it will make a difference for them or not.  But we do know at least we tried.

I was always an 'in the moment' kind of person.  I never thought anything would hurt me. I never expected the worst because even though there had been some upsetting times in my life, we, the family, always came out of it okay.  I learned from an early age to just live in the moment.  It was okay to cry and be disappointed but then dry your eyes and see what's for supper.  Luckily I was the type of person who 'got over' most things in the moment and managed to move on to what's next.  It took looking back to see what situations caused damage and what set a warm smile in my heart.  It also taught me some of it is what we make of it... Some things are fixable and some you just put in the saddlebag and get on with the trip.

But there are some moments that make us smile for the rest of our lives. I hope there are people who think of me and smile about their moment I helped happen.  Like the dentist my mother worked for.  Mom's husband, (my stepfather), had been badly injured in a logging accident and it was apparent Mom was now required to be the breadwinner of the family as well as the wife and mother.  She did not miss a beat.  She got a job, went to a community college evenings and weekends, and learned to be a dental assistant. Even though fate had dealt her a very difficult situation for the previous three years, life stepped up and handed her a super good job with a very nice dentist directly across the street from our home!  He was a good dentist and a very nice person and our lives were a lot better thanks to him being generous with his wages as well as any dental work we all needed.  And he drove this amazing creamy white 1953 MGB coupe convertible that caused my heart to skip a beat every time he drove it to work.  I was 16, had just gotten my drivers license, and during those years could be considered car crazy.  If it had wheels, I knew about it.

One day I was standing next to the amazing car with its top down,  sliding my hands over the shining doors and lovely matching leather seats when the Doctor stepped out of the office with his hands in his pockets kind of looking down at the sidewalk.  "I am going to sell the car," he mumbled.  "I don't use it much anymore."   At my age it felt like someone had told me the world was ending!  I stood there with my mouth hanging open in shock with my hands clasping the car!  I mean, what does a teenager say to her mother's boss about selling the most beautiful car in the world!?  Evidently my mother was worried about the same thing because she came rushing out of the office with a handful of papers to direct attention away from the devastating car moment.  But then 'the-moment-to-remember' came in to being.  The doctor reached in his pocket and took out the car keys and said: "Take it for a ride."

And then the keys were in my hand.  The keys to the most fabulous car in the world were in my hands!

Talk about a 'moment'.  That moment has stayed with me my entire life.  I was a kid who loved a car. I was a kid who was told to go ahead and drive the car. I was a kid in heaven.  No one can tell me there isn't one because I was there.

My mother was in shock!  It was her boss!  She stood there with wide eyes and mouth hanging open and said: "She just got her license."

And the Doctor boss answered: "I have insurance."

As fate would have it I had been driving since I was 12 years old and had never driven anything without a stick shift. The MG would not be a problem.  I jumped in the car and started it up.. It roared beautifully!  Zoom!  Zoom!  I was in heaven.  I yelled: "Thank you!" as I backed up that fabulous car and pulled out of the parking lot.  A clueless kid in a very expensive car in a small, close knit town.  Heaven.  I roared way too fast to my best friends house and sat out front honking the horn and roaring the engine!

She came running out screaming: "Where did you get that!?"

I yelled: "GET IN!"  and off we went.  We yelled and laughed and honked and zoomed up this street and down the other!  The car was fabulous! It was fast and perfect and amazing to drive and in it there were two teenage girls who were doing something they would talk about for the rest of their lives.  All it took was one person with good intentions to give a life memory.

After about 20 minutes I took my friend home and drove back to the office parking lot.  The Doctor came out grinning."  I see you didn't have a wreck" he laughed.  I got out floating over the earth.  I was in tears of joy and I could not help but give him a hug,  he could not help but laugh, and my mother could not help but fall into her chair with relief.

And I could not help but remember that fantastic moment for the rest of my life.   It taught me to be aware; there are always moments that count and it's in all of us to give them to others.

Thank you, Doctor...Thank you..
