Family Lynx

There are times in life when what we are experiencing is not our gig, we are just caught up in the middle of the events of another person and ride along until its time to step out.  But sometimes it's just amazing to be in the middle of things especially if we are not really affected by it!   It is a time we look back and see that  incidents of life lead to another event which leads to another.  What we see is that life is a series of events; nothing in life 'just happens,' something else has to happen first.  Some are a bit more interesting than others!

My husband had 11 brothers and sisters, each one of them was married and most of them had kids.  A lot of them had more than one marriage so to say it was difficult to remember who was who would be putting it mildly. But one of his sisters was married to a guy who was impossible to ignore.  Most of us were pretty much average people, living and  having the same kinds of problems as anyone else, so anything that was out of the ordinary sat up on the top of the list of things to pay attention to.  But it was also made very clear by the sister-who-married- 'Guy' that no one was to say anything about any of it or act as if we knew anything!

That part of the game was very important and made the whole situation even more intriguing!  Guy was an upper member of the Hells Angels.  Back in those days this particular motorcycle club was totally above the law. They did anything they wanted, and if anyone interfered (including cops), they were 'taken care of'.  They all drove amazingly customized Harley Davidson motorcycles which made each one of them special and different.  Each man wore the club jacket but otherwise dressed in an individual manner that made them both fit in and stand out.  And each man, without exception, did exactly as he wanted in the moment. The gang was well named because most of the men were angels from hell..

With that much family in the same area, there was always something going on, always a reason to visit.  The-sister-married-to-Guy was even more interesting to visit because she was intelligent, pretty, a good mother, and took very good care of Guy.  She went along with all of the rules of the gang and the main rule was do not act like you are in the gang!  Do not do things that attract attention, keep life good and ordinary.  There were rules about who you could talk to, what you could say, and  Sister always looked like she followed all of the rules perfectly!  If we went to visit her when Guy was home the first thing we were blessed with was a view of the Harley!  It was the only item in the garage.

It was spotless, sitting in a spotlight in an environment kept at a certain temperature and when the light was turned on, it stood out like it was, indeed, ridden by an Angel. We paid homage obediently and then sat down in the dining room to be waited on by Sister who had tucked the kids in the bedroom and had a wonderful meal prepared.   All Guy had to do was crook a finger and Sister bowed and obeyed and smiled and showed love.  She was so good.  But when Guy was not home she pretty much lived life as she pleased. I must say she was one of the most talented women I have ever met.  Because Guy had forbidden her to have a car or a personal life she just parked her nice little car up the street and kept nothing around to show evidence of any of her very nice personal life.  I must say she was one of the most talented women I have ever met.  She did not have one fearful bone in her body, and her bad-ass husband never had a clue.

One year they moved from the cute little house in a nice old neighborhood to a newer large house that sat on top of a very large double car garage in a more upscale neighborhood.  Guy had 'come into' money.  He was now driving delivery trucks and oddly enough some of the merchandise 'fell off' of the truck at times and somehow ended up in Guy's garage.  A locked door in the kitchen opened to a long, wooden stairway down into a large, full-of-lost things garage. It was interesting that he never tried to hide anything from any of us! He acted like it was just his job, and that we had all been forewarned about talking about it! Considering there was an immediate family of about 60, I always felt a bit puzzled about the fact he never tried to hide his actions from any of us, but... to the best of my knowledge no one ever said a word about it to anyone!

One day we were at the nice new place visiting when Guy said: "I have something to show you down in the garage!"  I looked at Sister for any warning tips, and she did look at the floor and shrug her shoulders, but was evidently warned not to speak.  The door opened, and my husband, me, and Guy started going down the steps into the garage that looked like a dark, full basement, when suddenly a large Lynx cat jumped down from a shelf!  I had never been around many cats of any kind in my life so to have this large wild looking creature coming straight at me was more than a bit scary!  Guy said: "Oh here's the guard cat!  He's trained to protect the merchandise!"  So naturally, at that moment the Lynx came straight toward me up the steps and BIT me on the lower leg! Chomp!  I didn't know what to do!  I gasped and Guy yelled: "Stand still! He won't hurt you!"  Won't!?  Luckily back in those days my skin was tight and not saggy and he had bitten me right on the front shin bone and more or less scraped down the leg other than bite a hole in it, but fact is, I had a cat wound on my leg!

Guy waved his hands and told the cat to get back, and it did.  I was expected to shut up, go down stairs and see all the 'merchandise' that had fallen off all those trucks!  I knew from watching Sister those past few years that women in this setting did what they were told..  So, I did.  The merchandise was amazing.  Stacks of boxes of just about anything a person can imagine 'falling' off of trucks a few boxes/items at a time.  A money-making situation witnessed by a bleeding blond acting like she was impressed.  I got it. There are times in life to just go ahead and smile while ya bleed.

I don't know if this is a happy ending or not, but several weeks after the cat incident, Guy had gone into a bar and gotten into  a fight with someone.  It was against the law to carry guns into a bar, so he had ran out to his car, grabbed his gun, and burst back into the front door of the bar.  The bartender saw the gun, reached down and grabbed his own gun, and shot Guy between the eyes... Dead.  The angel was dead.

A few days later Sister had a 'gathering' at her house...but not a funeral.   Most of us came to see how she was doing.  Her car was parked in full view outside, and the doors to the garage were open. She looked relaxed as she puttered in the kitchen, hugged family, and laughing at anything. She said: "The cat is gone.  If anyone wants ANYthing out of the garage, take it and never mention it to anyone."   Needless to say there was a nice bright clean garage for her to park in at the end of the day.  The air was calm, and she could do anything she wanted for the first time in years.

I found it interesting that no one ever talked about him again.  Sister got on with life and did great.  It showed me there are times in life when we just have to play along and get through it.  It showed me what a brave person can do with so much working against them.  It showed me most of it is what we make of it.  I never mentioned the cat bite to anyone.  I figured it was a really cool scar to remember a story that would be hard to make up.  There are times in life to just to chalk it up, get out the bandaid and call it experience!
