August's birth flower is gladiolus, or 'sword lily,' flower of the Gladiators (from Latin, the diminutive of gladius, a sword), is a genus of flowering plants, iris family (Iridaceae). Gladiolus are native to tropical and South Africa and are any plant of the genus Gladiolus. The plant has sword-shaped leaves with one-sided spikes of funnel-shaped, bright flowers.
The genus Gladiolus contains about 260 species, of which 250 are native to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. About 10 species are native to Eurasia.
It represents remembrance, calm, integrity, strength and infatuation. With gladiolus, the recipient's heart is being "pierced with love."

The pollen of the poppy is interesting because it can be very different colors; some poppy pollens are blue while others are yellow, gray, etc., Some varieties of poppies can be used to extract and make opium which is a hallucinogenic drug. Today, opium is a banned substance in most countries.
