August's birth flower is gladiolus, or 'sword lily,' flower of the Gladiators (from Latin, the diminutive of gladius, a sword), is a genus of flowering plants, iris family (Iridaceae). Gladiolus  are native to tropical and South Africa and are any plant of the genus Gladiolus. The plant has sword-shaped leaves with one-sided spikes of funnel-shaped, bright flowers.

The genus Gladiolus contains about 260 species, of which 250 are native to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. About 10 species are native to Eurasia.

It represents remembrance, calm, integrity, strength and infatuation. With gladiolus, the recipient's heart is being "pierced with love."

“Love At First Sight” is the meaning of this flower when offered as a gift.

"Glads"  bloom in a variety of colors like red, pink, white, yellow and orange. It stands for sincerity and symbolizes strength of character.

The other August flower is the poppy. A red poppy signifies pleasure, a white poppy is given for consolation, and a yellow poppy wishes wealth and success.

The poppy is an annual, biennial, or perennial plant of the Family Papaveraceae, typically with showy flowers borne one per stem, native mainly to the Northern hemisphere and often grown for ornament, opium or food. The golden poppy is the state flower of California.

The poppy is part of a flowering plant family that is comprised of a few different species that make up the poppy flower. The poppy generally has 4 to 6 petals which can be almost any color and may have different markings that will make them unique. The pollen of the poppy is interesting because it can be very different colors; some poppy pollens are blue while others are yellow, gray, etc., Some varieties of poppies can be used to extract and make opium which is a hallucinogenic drug. Today, opium is a banned substance in most countries.

This flower represents oblivion, imagination, pleasure consolation wealth and success.
