Flowers That Bloom in May (by StarzJC).

April showers bring May flowers. As late spring rolls around each year, the landscape is generally painted in a variety of bright colors because of the many flowers that bloom during this time of the year. From flower gardens to ornamental trees, spring represents a time of rebirth.

One of my fondest memories from my early childhood is watching my great-grandmother picking peonies from her garden in late May so that my mother could bring them home with her.  The peony bulbs were dutifully dug up when she had to change houses and my mother was gifted with them since the new landlord didn't want anything planted in "his" garden.  Those bulbs are now in my late mother's garden and will travel one more time to mine after they bloom.  I will take care of them as lovingly as those two women did during their lifetimes and hope that my grandchildren will appreciate them as much as I do when I'm gone.

There are other wonderful flowers that bring their beauty and color to us during this month.  Many years ago a neighbor gave us tiny rootings from his lilac bushes and they now stand tall guard over the end of the driveway.  The gardens around the house are graced with lily of the valley, agapanthus, amaryllis, anemone, calla lilies, corn flowers, dahlias and hyacinths. Corn flowers, Cosmos, Dahlias, Delphiniums,  Forsythia, Freesia, Heather, Helleborus, Hollyhocks, Hyacinths, Larkspur Casa Blanca Lily, Gloriosa Lily, Stargazer and Liatrus. Blue Dogbane, Amsonia tabernaemontana is a flower that only blooms in May. This month, tulips. daffodils. hibiscus. narsisus. iris, hydranea. magnolias. roses.  The cherry blossoms linger as the peach trees put forth their froth of flowers.  Buds are popping on the Gardenia plants tucked away in the sunroom along with the potted oleander.

Next year I'll add bleeding hearts, four-o-clocks and pansies beside the tiger lilies that are now putting out long bending leaves. These were in my childhood garden and bring me smiles remembering the trip with my father down to the "woods" at the end of our street to bring home the corms that would grace August with a bright burst of orange.

Yes, May is a prolific month for flowering plants that bring awesome beauty to the world and fond memories of those who have gone on...
