Britain’s long history contains seemingly endless legends that tell of mysticism according to boredomtherapy.com. From witches, both good and evil, to dragons, elves, and spirits, mythology is around almost every corner. A castle or lake can hold so many secrets that it’s almost impossible to avoid folklore when visiting the British Isles.

One particular small cave nestled in Surrey, England is one such example of a site that holds many stories dating back multiple centuries. Still, it’s unclear what really happened there, save for one thing: the devil was involved.

According to legend, the devil himself was said to have visited this cave, and what supposedly took place was truly horrifying.

In Surrey, England, there is an ancient cave that holds many stories from centuries ago. Located in the sandstone cliffs of the Wey Valley at Moor Park, this legendary site is known as Mother Ludlam’s Cave.

In 1218, a monk named Symon claimed the cave had a spring that supplied water to Waverley Abbey. But perhaps the most famous story about the cave comes from the 17th century, wherein a friendly old white witch named Mother Ludlam lived.

Mother Ludlam was known locally as someone who would generously lend the townspeople anything they needed, with one condition: that they return the borrowed item within two days.

According to lore, the Devil himself once asked Mother Ludlam to lend him a cauldron. She recognized his hoof prints as demonic and refused to give it to him. But he stole it anyway, and as he ran from her, he leapt, creating the hills near a village named Churt. The hills are, appropriately, known as the Devil’s Jumps.

The legend continues. As he ran, the Devil dropped the cauldron on the last hill he made, now called Kettlebury Hill. The Devil may have run away, but Mother Ludlam retrieved her cauldron.

To ensure that the Devil would not be able to access her cauldron again, Mother Ludlam placed it somewhere she knew he couldn’t enter—in the Fresham Church—which still stands in its original form.

In 1976, part of the cave’s roof collapsed, and the floor was covered in a large mound of sand. These days, the only living beings in the cave are different species of bats—including the long-eared bat.

There are so many stories about Mother Ludlam’s Cave, that we can’t be sure what is real. But that is what makes folklore so fascinating; its mysteries can be left up to interpretation.
