Difference is a necessary part of human evolution and everything in life is comprised of opposites, which together make life whole. If you light a candle in a room already flooded with light, the light of your candle would be indistinguishable from the light of which already exists. Because of darkness we are able to perceive light; both are necessary.
This shows that we need light in dark in order to balance things in our lives. This may not seem like a good thing to some, but it needs to be this way for us to learn the lesson we are needing to learn. As through the darkness we will learn how to LOVE when the light finally shines through. When one thing seems like it doesn't fit because it is the TOTAL opposite from what we were thinking, this is truly showing us that things really aren't at all that different that we can relate and be on the same page as something that is TOTALLY opposite from us!
