• As Phlox blooms fade, remove spent flower heads to prevent seeding, and fertilize for fall bloom.
• Bleeding Hearts, Doronicums, and Lupines can be transplanted this month.
• Check tall Bearded Iris for borers.
• Crops that remain in the ground, such as Swiss Chard and Parsnips should be top dressed with fertilizer.
• Cut any Raspberry and Blackberry canes that have fruited this year.
• Divide Oriental Poppies and Daylilies.
• Do not apply fertilizer to Roses or broadleaved evergreens this late in the season.
• Don't push yourself these lazy days of summer, save some enthusiasm for gardening work next month
• Examine the underside of Azalea, Laurel and Rhododendron leaves for any signs of insects.
• Gather up and burn any diseased Hollyhock leaves.
• If you are going for big Dahlia flowers, disbud the plants.
