Blavatsky wrote about some of it. So did Thomas Burgoyne in "Light of Egypt." A. E. Waite may have, too, but I don't remember. Here's a thumbnail explanation of what I have read.
Going back to early days after creation , it was important for souls on the outward path to experience material conditions before returning to the creator as mature souls.. However, the individual entities were too strong (for lack of a better word) or their vibrations were too high to come down into matter.
Thus they "split" into two parts--each containing part of the other.
As they slipped down into matter they 'forgot' each other. Once in matter, they each had a struggle to develop sufficiently to become more spiritual and rise higher on the return path. The dominantly masculine entities were positive on the physical and mental levels but negative on the emotional and spiritual sides of their nature. The female dominants operated positively on the emotional and spiritual sides and negatively on the mental and emotional.
When I use the terms positive and negative they are more like electrical terms--not judgmental ones.
Nevertheless, it explains the typical male/female need for each other since each hungers for completion. We all "practice" on our partners and use the partnership itself to develop spiritually.
In any case, the actual halves of an individual soul are not meant to be reunited until they reach a higher level of spiritual growth, no longer on the physical plane. When an accidental meeting occurs, it halts their spiritual progress because once united they don't feel a need to stretch or reach for anything else. It usually requires action after death to separate them again so they continue the maturing process.
That is what I have learned from various esoteric sources. I do not have a personal source of information, as I said, and this is merely what I have read.
