First let's look at how society defines "witch" :
witch - noun \ˈwich\
A woman who is thought to have magic powers; a person who practices magic as part of a religion (such as Wicca); a very unpleasant woman (excuse me???)
Unfortunately, this is the negative connotation we see attached to the word. But, honestly, we need to look at it from another perspective.
Cobblers make shoes and coopers make barrels, but what is it that a witch does? One answer could be that a witches do magic… or do they? Isn't it the Universe, the All-One, the Deity, who holds the power of existence, the elements we are made of even unto the stars?
Another beautiful, correct response would be that a witch invites magic into the conscious experiences of people. Good, but still not too full of substance.
Perhaps a more significant word for what a witch does is “conjure.” Yes, yes, it has a very “wicked witch in a fairytale” aspect to it, but it fits much, much better.
So now we have double the questions! What does a witch conjure? Why, magic, of course. What is magic??? Oh, my, now we have some truly deep, personal questions here! First, it depends on exactly what magic is to be conjured.
Wikipedia says that Magic is “the art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation, ceremony, ritual, the casting of spells or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature.” Well… not exactly… It’s so much more than an action or an art. It’s a sensation, a vibrational alignment with Divinity, a glimpse of our soul in motion…Magic is the result, not the action that invited it into consciousness.
If we but look, we will find that magic is everywhere! From the time we wake up in the morning to the deep sleep of night, it is a Zen experience. Witches merely translate this Zen experience into a giving… whether it’s a tarot reading, collecting messages from a crystal ball or scrying mirror, it’s all manifesting Spirit to share it with others.
One of the most amazing aspects to magic and readings is clarity. In the moment of magic, there is a quality of crystal clarity… total comprehension. It’s the penultimate “AHA” moment and divine grace rolled into one. It is divine, it is magic! This is an example of magic working on the mental and emotional levels, within the Unseen Worlds. The person receiving the reading experiences the magic in a moment of emotional and mental insight. It feels like an inner light is asked for, given by the Universe and received by the individual. Sweet and simple.
All of this is a little too simple, but it gives you an idea of what a witch really does. To create an opening to the Divine…
