Annular Solar Eclipse.

Sep 1, 2016

According to Wikipedia, An annular solar eclipse will occur on September 1, 2016. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun's, blocking most of the Sun's light and causing the Sun to look like an annulus (ring). An annular eclipse appears as a partial eclipse over a region of the Earth thousands of kilometres wide.

The site at eclipsewise.com tells us the instant of greatest eclipse takes place on 2016 Sep 01 at 09:08:02 TD (09:06:54 UT1) at 9° Virgo 21. This is 5.4 days before the Moon reaches apogee. During the eclipse, the Sun is in the constellation Leo. The synodic month in which the eclipse takes place has a Brown Lunation Number of 1159.

The eclipse belongs to Saros 135 and is number 39 of 71 eclipses in the series. All eclipses in this series occur at the Moon’s ascending node. The Moon moves southward with respect to the node with each succeeding eclipse in the series and gamma decreases.

The annular solar eclipse of 2016 Sep 01 is followed two weeks later by a penumbral lunar eclipse on 2016 Sep 16.

These eclipses all take place during a single eclipse season.

The eclipse predictions are given in both Terrestrial Dynamical Time (TD) and Universal Time (UT1).
