Architecture and interior design deeply affect the way a person feels about a space according to rd.com. Your home is your sanctuary, so you should love living in it! To ensure that it’s the most comfortable place to be, professional designers and DIYers alike consider the psychology of color. As Very Well Mind explains, “color is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and even influence physiological reactions.”

While your furniture and accessories will play a role in that, your walls may have the greatest impact of all, since they literally surround you with their energy. But with so many paint options and ever-changing trends, it can be hard to make a decision. Make things a lot simpler by considering your zodiac sign and the personality traits that define you—and then pick the hue that suits you best. For more advice about home decor, check out these design rules you should never break.

Aries (March 21–April 19)
The last adjective anyone will ever ascribe to Aries is “boring.” The same is true of their homes, which must be as striking and impressive as they are. “An Aries house has a modern look,” says astrologer Susan Miller, creator of AstrologyZone.com. “It’s sleek and very elegant, like something you would see in a magazine. They love dramatic art, and they’re good with texture. Aries is the sign of the entrepreneur and the individualist, and they want their stamp on the look of the home.”

Their walls may be white, but they will also reflect an Aries’ sense of individualism with red or orange accents. One room of the house may even be entirely painted in bright red! You can’t go wrong with Valspar Signature Satin Classic Red.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)
Taurus is sensual, so it may come as a surprise that neutrals are the go-to colors for this sign. But there’s a reason for it: There is so much going on in a Taurus home that the walls need to be painted neutral to tie it all together. “This is the investment sign,” Miller explains. “They’re thinking long-term, and they take exquisite care of things. Their senses are very acute. They probably have candles [and] a good music system with big speakers. They might have flowering trees and houseplants.”

Textures, like velvet, are important to Taurus, too. If a bright paint color were applied to the walls, it’s easy to see how that might be too loud and overstimulating—even for a Taurus. The best bet for a paint color that will make this sign happy for years to come is something like Valspar Alabaster, a white paint with a warm undertone.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)
As an air sign, Gemini is drawn to light, and it’s an incredibly important aspect of interior design for them. “They’re [born] at the time of the year when it’s the longest daylight, so their color is pale yellow,” Miller says. “Gemini needs a lot of light and windows.” The perfect Gemini living space feels open and invigorating; dark paint colors would make them feel trapped and uncomfortable. This sign also gets bored very easily, so Miller recommends accessorizing: “They might have a neutral, white couch with different pillows they can change around by season.” Valspar Satin Champagne is a light yellow paint color that’s still neutral enough to provide a great backdrop for bold-colored furniture.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)
“Cancer rules the home,” Miller says. Period. Full stop. Entering a Cancer household is a soothing experience because this is where they put all of their energy. Family is most important to Cancer, so their homes are filled with comfort and love, and their decor needs to reflect that. “This is a home that embraces you the minute you walk through the door,” Miller adds. “They have a knack for making a home a complete haven from the world. It will be charming—maybe Country French.” To pull this off, very soft colors such as white, smoky blue, and soft pink are recommended. Recolor Paints Storm Blue is a muted shade of blue that will foster the relaxing atmosphere you want.

Leo (July 23–August 22)
Leo’s regal character demands only the finest materials, home appliances, and, yes, colors. “The three colors that are very associated with Leo are gold, scarlet, and purple,” Miller says. “Those are the most expensive dyes. When the king and queen went out to meet their populace, they wore those colors because their subjects wouldn’t have clothes in that color.” People born under this sign won’t necessarily think they are better than anyone else, but they definitely won’t accept anything less than the best in their homes. Leos aren’t average—they’re designer. Valspar Satin Quite Red is a stunning primary color and can be accented with this Brilliant Metals Gold Base for an even greater sense of luxury.

Virgo (August 23–September 22)
Virgo is an earth sign, often depicted as a Mother Earth type of figure. People of this sign are nurturing and steady, so their walls won’t be painted with anything too brazen. “A Virgo is organized,” Miller states, “with neutrals, creams, navy, grays, chocolate, and possibly teal accents.” Virgos not only like to replicate the natural world in their home decor but also bring real plants and greenery into their homes. They may even paint small flowers on the walls, but they would be discreet and never ostentatious. Paint your interior in Satin Swiss Chocolate for a natural yet sumptuous look.

Libra (September 23–October 22)
Libras are born in the heart of autumn, but their aesthetic isn’t as earthy as that of a Virgo. Instead of reds, yellows, browns, and oranges that might mimic the changing leaves outside, people of this sign seek a softer color palette. “Libra is ruled by Venus,” Miller explains, “and Venus is associated with pastels. It’s the rococo dining room: cream, pale pink, pale blue, mint green.” Silk and fine cotton fabrics are also essential to Libras. “They’re very refined,” Miller concludes. “Libra needs beauty.” Valspar Satin Baby Blush is the kind of sweet, soft pink that will evoke the inner beauty that lies within any Libra.

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)
Scorpios are known for their mysteriousness. Where Gemini needs light, Scorpio craves shadow. “Scorpio likes things black,” Miller says. “They like things that are dark, like eggplant—sensuous but sleek. They get too high-strung if they see too much stimulation in the house. They need things calm and private.” Black, deep grays, dark purples, and burgundy are all excellent paint color choices for a Scorpio. This Sumptuous Purple will give your walls a deep, rich hue without being overbearing.

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)
Sagittarius is excited by life, and their home decor evokes that same feeling. “Sagittarius likes to bring home things from their far-flung travels,” Miller says. “They bring home mementos and showcase them beautifully. They’re gregarious [and] they like to have friends over, but unlike the Leo who will serve the meal on beautiful china, Sagittarius will order some interesting Thai food takeout and it’ll be fun.” The perfect wall choices for a Sagittarius include bright, vibrant colors and interesting patterns, like stripes. Go for a warm, Bohemian vibe with Valspar Satin Sunset Glow.

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)
Having been born in the winter, Capricorn craves a cozy environment. Some may say people of this sign are austere, but they prefer to see themselves as minimalists and traditionalists. “They love wood-paneled walls and traditional furniture,” Miller says. “Neutrals like cream, black, gray, brown—with Capricorn, there’s beauty in simplicity.” Compliment your wood furniture or wood paneling with Recolor Paints Eggshell Pewter.

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)
In stark contrast to Capricorn, Aquarius ditches traditionalism for modernism. “They like cobalt blue, fuchsia, and gray,” Miller says. “They’ll use fabrics you’ve never heard of. The modern appliances are very striking in an Aquarius house. They like to be different. They love bright, neon color, but not too much of it. They’ll use it against a charcoal gray or a navy blue.” Use Valspar Satin Peppercorn as a base and the brand’s Cosmic Pink for a pop of color.

Pisces (February 19–March 20)
Pisces is a water sign, so you can’t go wrong with any shade of blue! Miller likens their desired color palette to that of Monet’s Water Lilies. “Those are their colors—the blues, the turquoise, the pale pinks, the whites that are almost blue, lilac, violet,” she says. “[Pisces is] poetic and soft.” Pisces enjoys a calm, fluid environment that sets the scene well for displaying photography and other types of art. It’s almost as if they aim to live in a painting or a dream. Valspar Signature Satin Nautical or Recolor Paints Eggshell Wave are shades of blue that will help achieve that vibe.
