Here there's a young woman holding a lion's mouth closed. Her face is serene. She doesn't struggle to do so.
If she's not struggling, and she's not at all. How is the lion's mouth closed?
It's closed because it's calm. The lion's soothed. The maiden worked her animal whispering skills to great effect-a serene lion.
It's not as far-fetched as you would think. But people live among animals all the time, Jane Goodall did for years with gorillas.
It's scary as all get out to attempt what the young girl has done. But what's not known is how long the maiden worked to gain a savage beast's trust. What's pictured in Strength might be the crowning glory of her young life.
She's spent her life trying to understand the lion. And it shows because he's not attacking her.
They have a delicate partnership to be sure! But both parties seem happy with this truce.
The lesson of Strength isn't in physical power. It's not even in inner grit.
No, it's in compassionate acts borne from understanding and empathizing. Something that is not done often enough.
Especially now, the UK has voted to #Brexit. In the US, Donald Trump won the Republican nomination.
I'm not going to say much about the current political state. But #Brexit and Trump passed in part because of xenophobia-the fear of strangers. Or maybe even a fear of others who aren't like you.
And being fearful of others divides a populace. It creates an Us versus Them mentality.
Needless to say, dividing a populace is NOT the message of Strength. Causing fear and letting that fear control behavior is not strength.
When Strength appears consider the Aesop Fables, The Lion and the Mouse. In it, a mouse wakes a lion from his sleep. The lion threatens the mouse. The mouse responds that "such unworthy prey would bring the lion no honor." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_and_the_Mouse)
So the lion lets the mouse live. Later, the mouse hears the lion roaring and goes to see what the fuss is about.
Turns out the lion's trapped in a net by some hunters. The mouse, remembering earlier in the tale, that the lion had let him live, frees the lion.
Thus, returning the favor and showing the reader the moral of the fable. That no being is too small to help a larger one out.
Had the lion decided not to be compassionate, this tale would have ended. It didn't though and I'm so glad of that!
Today, practice compassion. Be kind. Be understanding.
Trust that your kindness will encourage more kind acts. Do a kind thing for someone else today.
Remember, nothing is too big or small! Even giving a penny can help someone out.
Embrace understanding. Spread compassion, not fear!
Remember, it's not a competition. Don't get caught in a rat race!
The lion's needs monster can cause you to lose sight of the things that matter. Keeping up with the Kardashians isn't one of them. Sorry, KUWTK fans!
