Life Stories by StarzAstroWand - "Old Park".

Old Park

Ever see those trailer parks for people over 55 and say:  ‘How could anyone live there!?  All those old duffers living in tin cans!?  A forest of canes, walkers, and big ol’ tricycles..not for me!’  But all is not as it seems.  Considering the total age of the residents is somewhere around 9375, there is a lot of experience and wisdom sitting in front of the TV’s in those tin cans!  Besides, it makes sense to hang out with those of like mind, similar circumstances, and various degrees of invisibility. (Old people get transparent, invisible, you know. At least if they hang out together they are ‘seen’ by someone.)  But a place like that is a challenge, not for the faint of heart. Here are a few tips to make the experience understandable.

1.  Remember no one plans to become an old, slightly befuddled, hard of hearing, bent over person with petrified bowels.  Mentally they all feel 25 and fabulous with the digestive system of a 12 year old!  And never did they plan to be part of a village full of people in various degrees of alive. Those degrees being:  “Okay.  Sort of....ok.  Who are you again?”  And: “I would go ahead and die but I don’t want anyone touching my wind chime collection.”   Everyone is in this living and dying adventure together, be understanding and supportive.

2.  Be okay with bowel talk and be patient!  Sometimes their health is the only thing they have to think about!  Put yourself in their shoes. How devastating for life to go from active, vital, and productive to NOTHING to do, from being needed to being forgotten, and from being able to do just about anything to barely able to put on your socks! Their years have value.  They have stories to tell, so what if they forgot they already told you?  These are stories and wisdom you cannot hear anywhere else!  Realize their value.  Be mindful of your karma.

3.  Don’t be smug; most of us will be in the same boat someday.  Don’t treat them like they are dumb; they are old, not stupid.  Speak to them like you would anyone else and if you see they are having trouble following you, slow down and use more familiar words.  And yes, they are nosy. Remember they have nothing else to do, so of course they are going to notice everything everyone else is doing.  A neighbor having company is probably the high point of everyone’s week!  Don’t worry about it; entertainment is where ya find it.

4.  Learn to love the “Old Bobs” and dogs with three teeth.  Every neighborhood has an “Old Bob”.  Nosy, busy, knows everything, has an opinion even if you don’t care, and usually has a scruffy little dog with three teeth.  Lots of the residents have dogs or cats. Those animals may be the only other living thing they touch in months. Think about that! Those animals might be the only reason some of them get out of bed. Life becomes very narrow as we grow old.

Message is:  love the Old Bob’s and their loyal fur kids. Some day they may be you.  When you think of it, if you are lucky, you will be one of them.  It is one of only two outcomes of your life and this will show you what you have to look forward to… so, leave some good karma.
