Jobs Teach

Every job teaches us something.  I often wonder what makes a human choose a job. I think it boils down to what they like,  what is available, and how much it pays.  Not everyone works because they like to.  But it is an instinct (and necessity) for all of us to 'do' something in life to survive.  Luckily we all gain something from life experiences, so when we realize there are thousands of different jobs in the world it makes sense the world is what it is because everyone chooses to serve a purpose in some way.

I discovered a job no one can imagine until they step in to it.  Every customer who walks in the door leaves the real world behind them. Their intentions are to be whomever they want, do anything they want, and say whatever they please. Their intentions are to leave the world outside and be anything they choose.  Imagine that!  They don't intend to be who they are.

The Employee who works in this specific environment has an incredible amount of rules they must  follow.  They are required to make the customer feel welcome and valued but at the same time know how to handle a person who might step out of line.  The employee must serve an entire room of people who all have the same attitude of being able to do and say whatever they please with very few rules.  This is the job of a bartender.

When I heard there was an opportunity to be taught how to tend bar I drew back.  I felt a bartender was a low class job working in a shady environment and I felt I was better than that.  Little did I know that life always sends us where we need to be and teaches us what we need to know, so I ended up going into training for a job that turned out to give me the ability to handle just about any kind of situation life sent me from that moment on.

Hard to imagine? It was for me.  I was a 25 year old non-drinker and usually dealt with everything that came my way with an up front, make-it-right manner without  much thought or hesitation.  But the bar job taught me that  everyone has more than one side of their personality and when booze takes away their inhibitions some of them turn in to totally different people!  I learned I had to run the whole show! I had to serve the drinks, make people feel welcome and comfortable, and follow all the legal rules on how to handle someone with alcohol in their system.

I found out when alcohol is in a person a lot of them are not the same person who walked in! So not only did I have to be good at fixing drinks, I had to be able to handle people who thought nothing about saying things they would never say any other time!  I had to learn to just ignore it and not take it personally, but when men I knew on a  'community' basis (such as doctors, lawyers, cops, business owners) would say things that left me speechless I had to learn to just take it in stride and 'leave it be'.

I discovered  the booze takes away the conscious person and their 'other person' is allowed to step out, and that everyone has another side.  I had to work with that person, not the professional nice person I knew.   So it's tend bar, serve drinks, keep the peace,' cut off' a customer who was obviously drunk and make sure everything was in order all at the same time!  From that time on I figured out if I could handle a room full of drunk people with no inhibitions I could handle just about anything in any job.  Yes, there were some moments things did not go well. There is no way anyone can be sure about a drunk.

One man offered me twenty dollars a button if I cut them off of my dress.  I told him thank you but I was wearing an undergarment and nothing could be seen.  He grinned and put away a big wad of money.  Everyone at the bar was laughing, including me.  I mean, how often does anyone get offered money to cut off a button!

** Then there was the old man playing a small antique slot machine and had a line up that might pay $50.00!  He reached out, grabbed my boob and hit the button.  He won!  He loudly announced that he knew my left boob would do the trick!

** Then there was the local TV cable company owner.  He provided a free TV behind the bar that was kept on during slow times so a customer at the bar could watch a game.  He and his wife and another couple came in and I could tell he was very drunk.  I kindly told him I would not be able to give him a drink but how about they sit down and I would bring him a cup of coffee.  He exploded with anger about me having the nerve to deny a rich man anything he wanted! In anger he came behind the bar, tore the cable connector off of the TV and threw it at me hitting me in the face leaving a bruise.  He was banned from the bar for the entire time I managed it.

** Then there was the man who came in drunk holding a big bottle of booze. That was just about the most illegal situation a bar in this state could experience so I went around the bar and ordered him to give me the bottle.  He loudly cussed and drank more booze and for some reason I punched him... and got the bottle.

** What about the local accountant who said he thought I should have sex with him so he would know if his wife was a good deal or if he should find someone else?

** What about the billionaire who owned the club who put on a large, male only private party one night with only me expected to handle everything because he wanted to keep it very private!  I was expressing my doubts about being able to handle all of it when he turned around, patted me on the butt and said just deal with it... and walked away.

** Then what about the wonderful, honest, clean cut man who asked me out and a year later ended up being my husband for many years.

Dealing with the other side of life for 8 hours a day gave me the skill to handle just about anything in any setting life brought me from that time on.  Remember, if you are in a 'situation' ask yourself what you are learning.  Take the positive side of it and keep in mind we have a choice  how we think and how we handle something.  Use the information everything brings you to help  handle what comes next...there is always a next.
