June Gems - Pearl, Alexandrite, Moonstone .

Jun 16, 2016

Each month has its own special gemstone assigned to it.  In most cases it’s just one or two sparklers that represent the month, but not so for June.  This month is lucky enough to have three, the pearl, alexandrite and moonstone.  In this article from babiesonine.com we find out about their history, where they come from and what they mean in our lives.

The pearl is one of the oldest known gems in human history. This particular piece is not a stone but rather a formation of Nacre inside a mollusk or oyster. Because of the organic nature of this unique element, it was thought that only the heavens could produce such a jewel because they were an unexplained organic phenomenon, and extremely rare. The pearl is the official birthstone of June, but is also the zodiac birthstone for Cancer which is from June 22 to July 22.

Pearl is Latin for the word unique. It had a reputation as being the rarest gem, yet the most magical. It was thought that the moon would place pearls in the sea to be found only by those that were chosen for royalty, great intellectual rankings, or for philosophy. For a child or infant to receive a pearl, or have had a mother that had a pearl, it was thought that the child was pure and innocent. This led to the belief that future decisions would be made with the purist of intentions and would later result in a great leadership.

During the 14th century in England, pearls began to take on another role as the markings of aristocracy and royalty. It gained such popularity that it was made law, along with the diamond, that royalty was the only class that could adorn the jewel. Mary, Queen of Scots, made this evident by having the largest collection of pearls in her crown jewels than any other royal member of England before or since.

The pearl today is in plentiful supply; however, to find a naturally-occurring pearl in the ocean is rare. Fresh water pearls are farmed heavily in China, and they include varieties of the traditional white, as well as Tahitian and Keishi.

June is the transitional month when spring ends, and summer begins. This is a time for you to enjoy the outdoors and nature with all of its splendor. The pearl birthstone is truly a fitting stone for this time of year, as it is representative of fresh innocence and magical change. The June flower is the rose and, like the pearl, this flower is used to represent new life, change, and purity.

The alexandrite is the official stone for the zodiac sign of Gemini. This sign begins on May 22 and completes on June 21. This stone is also the recommended substitution for the month of June. The stone comes in a variety of colors ranging from pink to bluish lavender to orange. The actual material is relatively new to the market of gemstones, so the history begins only in the mid-1800s. The story is quite romantic, and for your little one, be prepared to have a love bug on your hands. The mystical flower that accommodates this unique gem is the clematis flower that is a vivid purple and blue petaled vine.

The alexandrite is considered brand new amongst other gems since it has only been discovered within the last 200 years. The stone was originally found in Russia and was officially deemed the stone of Russian royalty. The colors of the stone even became mandatory for regional flags because the czarina found that the colors influenced a relaxed and loving mood. The stone was soon discovered to be quite rare, so when a 15-carat pendant was offered as a gift from the czar to his wife, it was considered to be the finest gift of all time.

Later in the 20th century it was noticed that the stone had a very unique appearance in that it would change colors in the light and with different temperatures. This is what began the thought that the stone was enchanted and could actually influence moods for the better. In the early 1900s, children in Russia would pass by the pendant that was made and claim to feel better and they would play better with their friends.

Today, the stone is viewed as a calming and relaxing gem that has a tendency to influence a loving mood. For Geminians that need approval and can struggle with communicating their feelings, this is the perfect gem to help get them comfortable with themselves and their loved ones.

This stone is extremely rare. In fact most stones on the market today are radiated peridot or topaz. Brazil and Tanzania are the main producers of the stone and are the only countries that mine stones that can be used for jewelry.

The history of this gem is still being written. While you may find that it can help calm your moods, it is still a power to create a fantastic legend. Many of the histories and legends that develop stem from one source of insight, or through a powerful experience.

The moonstone is a beautiful gem that is designated for the zodiac sign of Gemini. This sign takes place from May 21 and completes on June 21. This stone has a range of colors from a milky white to a milky pink. The color is an iridescent translucence that is reminiscent of the moon. The history and current information on this stone is extremely fascinating. The flower that accompanies this stone is the rose. This flower is very strong, but not indestructible, much like the fragile moonstone.

The moonstone has been valued as a gem for thousands of years. The Romans first found the stone and began to incorporate it in their jewelry, in the gifts offered to warriors, and also as a way of announcing a courtship. It was thought that this stone was one that could align vertebrae, like a mystical chiropractor. This belief stems from the idea that the moonstone was originally from the moon, and that it is always trying to return upwards. Therefore, the wearers of this stone are being aligned while adorned with the jewel.

Today, this stone is considered sacred in India, and in fact is not allowed to enter the outdoors unless a designated holy man is caring for and holding the gem. The belief about this stone is that it encourages prayer and concentration during meditation. Infants are visited by a holy man that will bless the child by holding the moonstone over the baby's head and then he will say a prayer.

Moonstone is mined in Brazil, the Alps, the United States, and Mexico, to name just a few. The stone is a gritty looking material that is sanded off through the use of acids. The stone is highly susceptible to damage from acidic materials, so this can prove to be a tricky process at times. These stones are set into jewelry in a cabochon setting as harsh cuts can cause the stone to break altogether.

Geminians are strong people that are highly intellectual but can have a tendency to be shy and have hurt feelings easily. Much like the moonstone, your Gemini child will need specific care and love in order to remain safe and pristine. Mothers are the best at providing the love and care that little Geminians need in order to grow up to be social and happy.
