Café of Life

It's interesting that life is a constant lesson.  Everything we do, everyone we meet, every interaction teaches us something, gives us information good or bad.  What we do with that information is one of the more interesting sides of life.  It is also why we are able to avoid  bad situations.  What it tells us is there are no guarantees in life.  We are meant to survive as long as possible and help others do the same.  Does life have a meaning?  That is where our individuality takes over.  We decide moment to moment what to do to make our life worth while.  It is always up to us.

The Café was old and kind of run down and one of few businesses left in the old, tiny, rural  town.  The larger town a few miles away had pretty much caused people to just live in the country, but not frequent the businesses, so things had dwindled with time.  The Café had been there for over 70 years and had been fixed, repaired and added on to so many times It was amazing anything worked, but it did.  It always had people in it.  It was a family place but also a bar with pool tables.  We could allow the kids in with their parents because we only served beer and wine, and were known for our small, but yummy menu of Pizza, burgers and steaks.  It was one of the most interesting places I worked since it was the only 'family' place in town but was also the only local bar where guys could come and play pool, drink beer and try to flirt with anyone brave enough to come in.  Oddly enough there was an unspoken time frame for each activity, and without anyone saying anything, there was the family time, and then the play pool and flirt time that never seemed to overlap.

One of the customers was an interesting guy who was obviously not a native of that area.  He had a New York air about him. He dressed different, fashionable, but not so much that it drew a lot of attention.  He wore an interesting hat with curly hair and a gold front tooth.  He wore a few gold chains and I found it interesting  that he was just different enough to stand out  but not enough to draw huge attention. He always had one or two guys with him who were not dressed like him, more basic and ordinary but who were obviously very alert.   And his name was Chad.  For some reason he and I hit it off right away.  It was lucky I had been around the block a few times because as I said, life teaches us things and it's up to us to use them to help us as we go along.  I knew he was a good guy to a certain point.  But because of my experience, I knew not to go anywhere past that  'point'.

We can all sense the energy around another person if we allow it.  For some reason I felt that Chad, no matter the aura around him,  loved jokes, and I knew jokes... lots of jokes.  The first time he walked into the Café my instincts kicked in and I popped a joke.  He laughed loud and matched my joke... We both laughed!  I popped another one, he matched me again.  The whole Café was laughing while I walked back into the kitchen to prepare  his order.  At that moment the bar owner walked by me very quickly and very quietly said: " That guy is the most powerful drug dealer in town."

Luckily I had woven myself into a good place with Chad and during his next visit to the Café he brought some friends and as he and I started swapping jokes he said: "You and I know so many jokes we should just number them instead of telling them!"  I agreed and the next time he walked in he yelled: "Number 35!!"  I laughed loud, hit the counter and said "I love how you tell that one!  It's almost as good as number 15!!" We had the whole place in stitches and it showed that even bad guys have a good side.

A few weeks later I found out how my lucky instincts had protected me.  One evening I saw some strange things going on with the other two waitresses and after a short period of time I realized they were dealing drugs behind the counter but were going out of their way trying to hide it from me.  I  pretended I did not notice until I could figure out what to do.  I was an ex cop. I was a law abiding citizen, I was working with two women selling drugs and I was a joke friend with the powerful drug dealer!  There was no easy solution!

I am a firm believer that fate will step in at the right time if we let it, if we listen.  As it happened, a few weeks later one of the customers got drunk and I told him I could not give him any more beer, that it was against the law for me to serve someone who was obviously drunk.  He began to yell at me and grabbed the phone and called the Café owner to complain.  About 10 minutes later the owner walked in and gave the guy a beer, and I gave my notice to quit!  Fate had sent me a good exit!

A few days later the owner sat down and talked to me, apologized about his actions and said he had fired the other two waitresses for dealing drugs.  I said "Good!  That was the other reason I quit!"  He said: "You knew they were dealing drugs? Why didn't you tell me?"  I said: "Did you forget the main drug dealer is a customer? I was not going to risk my life to try to stop him!"  The owner nodded, laughed and shrugged.  "It's been quite the deal, quite the deal. I will miss ya."   I laughed, gave him a hug, and left the wonderful Café to start my next life adventure. I was feeling really lucky so I went ahead and popped joke 47 as I walked out the door.... it's always a good idea to leave behind good energy... if you can.
