Moment of Intention

Everything we do affects someone  in some way.  Think about that.  What if all we did was smile at a person in the supermarket?  What if that person had just had something go very wrong in his or her life?  Our making eye contact and smiling shows that person they count, they are still a part of the world, and other people still 'see' them... they matter.  Their life is worth fighting for.

It does not always matter what the reason is that we acknowledge them or act and react.  Such as the guy who was a cop in a little town who liked the pretty young woman who worked at a local cafe that was part of the only local theater.  The theater was in the center of a beautiful small town so the owners always made sure it was well run, clean, and was there for everyone.  They ran good movies, kept their menu cheap and easy to fix, they ran Spanish speaking movies  every Wednesday, and cheap movies every Saturday so a Mom could drop off her kid(s), and for about a dollar each, had, at the very least, two hours of free time!

The pretty young woman working there was me and the cop was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He made sure I knew he liked me but that he was not the type to do anything out of line including making a move on a pretty, but married woman.. me. My husband was military and stationed on a ship that would go on missions that often took several months.  I had come home with our baby for the duration of this cruise but had to have a job to be able to pay rent.   And for some reason the cop had decided he would make it his job to keep an eye on my life to make sure I was safe.  He was that kind of person and never once stepped out of line or asked for anything.

Once when I was walking home at  midnight in a beautiful full moon he, in his cop car, pulled up  and started rolling slowly down the street next to me as I walked along.  We laughed and talked and as we did talk he said he was concerned about me being out there in the middle of the night by myself and did I know how to defend myself.  Of course I didn't, so he told me to stand on the yard I was walking past and wait a minute.  He pulled the cop car over and parked, then came over to me, a pretty blond, standing in beautiful grass in a warm summer full moon.. But I promise you there was not one glimmer of romance!  In thankful retrospect, I know for a fact this was the only moment in my life where a super handsome man walking toward me in the moonlight did not have sexual intentions.  He was a man true to his word, and a person who did the right thing, period.   He said: "Okay! I am going to teach you how to protect yourself!"

I don't have the words to describe how that odd, funny moment affected me for the rest of my life.  Right there on that moonlit grass, a wonderful man showed me how to fight with only one intention... to stop the other person in their tracks by doing as much deadly damage as possible.  I was amazed to see what is possible for a regular person to do with deadly intent!  I am not sure what the owners of the homes in the neighborhood might have been thinking if they happened to see a well built cop and a tall, slender blond doing battle in their moonlit yard, but if they did, not one light came on, not one dog barked. It was like we were alone on the planet and I was being shown how to stay alive.   He showed me what to do and not do with deadly force. He taught me how to move and conduct myself, when to strike and when to run.  It boosted my self confidence to the point that during my life if anyone ever showed  bad intentions toward me I simply made eye contact, slightly bent my knees, put my hands in front of me and said: "My best friend was a cop."   Nothing more ever happened, ever.

I never even knew the Cop's name.  He was just a buddy, a brother.  But I know for a fact he saved my life more than once since in my later, more adult years, I did, indeed,  go to work for a local Police Department.  I was not on the street but I was always around lawbreakers in some capacity and I never once felt afraid.    I had known a man who was true to his word and he was probably the only man I ever met who was.  His truth and his actions affected the rest of my life.

Keep that in mind.  Know that your actions and intentions can affect anyone in ways you can never imagine.  One word could make such a difference that it could, in the moonlight, save a life.
