Fate Knows

It was a slow Saturday morning at the restaurant.  The place was well situated on a local street but not far from the freeway nestled between some motels. You had to drive past us to get to just about anywhere on that side of town.  We had a good gang of locals who came on a regular basis but we also had times when we were full of travelers  with a dozen people up front waiting to be seated.  My job was to keep track of everything and everyone, seat people, provide the menu, take their money and wish them farewell-see-you-soon.  I liked it.  I could be around the locals, as well as have interesting moments with travelers.

For some reason Saturday mornings were nice and easy.  Early breakfast was over, things were in a lull before lunch.  Locals would come in and have some coffee to wake up, hang out and decide what to do with the day.  I always took that time to make sure everything was clean and in order before the lunch gang surged in.  I wiped things down, stacked things up, and made sure everything was in a convenient place.

As I was puttering this Saturday morning a young man came in and sat at the counter.  He had all kinds of energy.  He was looking here and there, he noticed everything, he was smiling and seemed friendly and relaxed but he had a tense energy, the type that had to make mental note of everything.  He smiled, drummed the counter, looked here and there and ordered some coffee.  You could tell he could not really sit still or be quiet so he was commenting about this and that, making small talk with anyone who would respond, and if no one would answer he just talked to himself.  He was funny so I knew he was not crazy, just one of those excess energy dudes and obviously not a local.  I bantered with him as I puttered around; he was smart and clever and you could tell he enjoyed not being a local.  I mean he could just be who he wanted to be and then get in his car and drive back to California never seeing anyone here again!  Nothing to lose.  Then the phone rang.

The core of this town was tight.  The core was compiled of locals, families, business owners.  Most of them had been a part of the town for generations, my own included.  So even though it was growing, the energy field that formed it was tight.  The lady on the phone owned a big night club on the edge of town. Once in awhile she hired entertainers, bands, and always had something going on so this morning she said: "I hired a comedian to put on a show last night and I really liked him!  He was good, but it was busy and I didn't have time to talk to him.  I know this sounds weird, but  I know he had to stay somewhere last night and get some coffee this morning before he left town, so I thought I would make some calls and see if anyone may have seen him."

I said: " Hmm.. what does he look like? I think he might be here!"

She described him, said his name was Larry and I said "Hang on, let me see if it's him... I think it is."    I laid the phone down and started wiping down the counter and then very casually  looked over my shoulder and said: "Larry... telephone.."

The man at the counter went dead silent.  His face went pale, he stopped in mid-sentence and his hands froze, his eyes were wide and he sat there looking at me in total shock.  In that instant I knew it was the man the bar owner was looking but I was going to play this for all it was worth.  "Well?" I said as I continued to putter behind the counter. "Are you going to take the call or not?"   He stared at me, his hands still frozen in place.  I had never seen total shock before and it was all I could do to keep from laughing.  I pointed at the phone more or less demanding that he get up and walk over and pick it up!

He stood up slowly, his mouth was still open..." No one in the world knows where I am!" he gasped.

"Well," I shrugged matter-of-factly, "someone obviously does! Answer the call!"

He very slowly picked up the phone and in a soft, shaky voice said, hello.  In just a few seconds his life came back to him as he discovered who was on the phone.   The professional entertainer kicked in immediately and we were all treated to one of the most funny, impromptu performances anyone can imagine..

"Oh my God"! he shrieked!  "No one could possibly know where I was yet I got a phone call!  I thought it was the Godfather! I was being warned I could not hide! They were coming for me! No! It was God!  he was.. he was.. "    and the act went on, getting better and better until Miss Bar Owner came in and started laughing and took him away to a booth... The two of them sat there and talked and laughed for a long, long time.

It was obvious fate had sent him where he was supposed to be at that particular moment in time because I am sure the funny man and that smart rich lady were destined to have a lot more going for them than a brief evening and an amazing phone call.   I enjoyed my part in this destiny moment....a lot.
