Empathic Herb

Everything  alive projects an energy.  No matter how small or how large, plant or animal, if it has life it has energy.  And whether we are aware of it or not,  everything alive absorbs  energy in some manner.  All of us have a story of being around someone or something that we felt good about or felt afraid of.  This is called empathy, absorbing or tuning in to the energy of  something else.  Some people can, and do, acknowledge this energy and allow it, embrace it, use it to 'feel' the truth.  Some of them have the ability but don't name it, they just live with it, use it the best they can.  They have realized every relationship with every living thing makes a difference. No matter how small and insignificant, or big and life changing, every 'energy' connection affects us in some way or the other.  Remember that.

Herbie never knew there was a name for his ability.  He was  a very nice, congenial, person who could tune in to anything alive and used that ability to make everything as nice as he could.  Not saying he was perfect.  Empaths often suffer from depression and frustration due to the fact they feel the truth but are often unable to use it to change what is happening.  But Herbie was smart, he found ways to manipulate things with the right words or actions to help bring things into line.  His skills took him up the business and social ladder to the point he was Executive Director of a well known organization in America.  He had a nice family, a wonderful, calm, gentle wife who projected sweet love.  She was willing to do what it took to make life good without demanding that Herbie do anything out of his comfort zone.  She tolerated his frustration moments and depression times by accepting it was just him, and so did he.  Sometimes nothing will help a person through those down times even if they know why it's happening.  Just like a head cold.  We know what it is and where we got it, but that does not make it go away.  It might help us avoid a child with a runny nose, but, there are times when we just tolerate things and let them run their course.  Another good life lesson.

I met Herbie and his wife after he had retired and moved to Idaho.  He and his sister had combined their money and bought a very large piece of land in a beautiful Idaho valley.  Sprawled out on the land were two homes with a good distance between them,  a few barns, a small cottage, and some large pieces of land they rented out to farmers to grow things such as potatoes and corn .  The sister took the older home and had it remodeled, and Herbie and CeCe moved into the beautiful two story home up on a slight hill over looking the valley surrounded by lovely fenced pieces of land he used to keep some cattle and a few horses.   As you pulled up to the house there was a very large circular area surrounded by trees and bushes and corrals and  was way large enough for his big horse trailer and pick up and car and whoever else drove up to visit.   There was a lovely  dog kennel all enclosed and warm and cared for.  He told me he trained dogs but life was easier without so many right now so there was just a loving Brittney Spaniel to cuddle.

I was drawn to Herbie right from the start when I rented the cottage.  I knew something was different about him and later I figured out it was to teach me the importance of the energy we all emit. (I won't say give because what comes out of us is just us, it's who we are but I have learned that we can, indeed, 'give' good energy if we choose to learn how.)  Herbie had learned to figure out what the other person needed, and what to do with that information.

He had huge gardens where everything grew!  I know full well he tuned in to the energy of the plants because I have pictures of wheelbarrows FULL of the most huge, wonderful veggies you can possibly imagine. His dog did anything he directed mostly with just a gesture or a soft word, and I mean anything! One man flew his dog all the way from Texas saying he thought the pooch needed retraining, that it was not following directions.  When the dog got to Idaho, Herbie stopped by the cottage with the dog and invited me to watch him run the dog through his routine.  The dog never took his eyes off of Herbie who slightly moved his fingers here and there and the dog did things I didn't know dogs could do.  Herbie called the dog's owner: "There is nothing wrong with the dog, its you."  The owner had to fly to Idaho to learn how to take care of the dog Herbie-the-empath had trained.

One day a local veterinarian called Herbie and told him a Labrador  had been brought in to the clinic after being  terribly wounded by a shot gun and left alone on the side of the road to die.  They didn't know if it was a hunting accident or on purpose but the Vet said even though he had been able to save the dog, it's spirit was totally broken and would not allow a man to even touch him.  Herbie said he would pick up the dog tomorrow.   Without even seeing the dog, for some reason he knew what he had to do.

He spent the day stacking large bales of straw into what looked like a nice sized igloo then stacked bales to form a private area to lay in the sun and small walk way. He also screwed in a large, strong chain holder.  The next day he went to get the dog.  My heart broke.  The dog was so injured and so deeply sad I knew what happened had not been an accident.  Herbie quietly said the same thing.  The dogs people had shot him and drove away.  Herbie was so tuned in to this animals energy he knew "Dog" needed a safe, kind place to heal with nothing whatsoever expected of him.  As the months went along Herbie and I would stop and say nice things to the animal but never demanded anything. Eventually Herbie started letting Dog off the chain to hang out around the house several hours a day.

Dog was not friendly yet but he no longer huddled in the back of the straw Igloo for days at a time or growl at every man.  In fact there was one old single man who used to stop by to chat with Herbie a couple days a week.  He would pull up, get out of his truck, leave the truck door open, say hello to Dog, chat with Herbie, then drive away.

One day about six months later, old man drove up, got out of his truck walked up to Herbie and they stood there and watched as Dog jumped into the pick up and sat comfortably in the passenger seat staring out the front window like he owned it.  Herbie and Old Man stood there staring at the truck.  Then Herbie said: "Looks like you got a dog."

Old Man shrugged: "Looks like I do."  He got in the truck and drove away.

Herbie had allowed Dog to let him know what he needed.. And now Dog had a life-long loving home.  That was, without a doubt, the most caring, loving, powerful empathic moment I have ever seen.  Thank you, Herbie, for this important lesson... Thank you with my heart.

(Note: Herbie is  on the other side now, but I felt him while I was writing his story. It made me smile. His message to everyone?   Tune in, it works.)
