Bed Sale

James was a handsome guy, smart, talented, and in the radio business just like his wife, my dear friend Rene, also in the radio business.  I had not seen him very often. I had known Rene most of her life and even though we all lived in the same area, it was a busy area and all of us were always busy. The last time I had seen them was at a funeral and even then James was working writing a news report and calling it in from the car using his radio voice.  I always joked  with both of them about their radio voices.  They could both be laughing and arguing sounding just as shrill as the rest of us when suddenly, to fit the moment, their voices turned to soft butter.  It was amazing how they always knew when to kick the voice into the proper gear the instant it was needed.

In the meantime, I had decided to move.  I was done with the hard work and busy area.  I had no real plan other than to be on the road, go here, go there, do whatever job presented itself, and that meant taking only what would fit in the car.  I had discovered years ago you could get what you needed just about anywhere you needed it so there was no reason to become attached to items.  I had, however, enjoyed the water bed, but since it would not fit in the car, it had to go.  I put the word out (with a reasonable price) in the giant condo complex I lived in.  It was a nice place but sprawled out so big it was like it's own little town with trees, pools, and covered parking, but  was also difficult to figure out how to get anywhere.  It was so large it even had its own small market and gas station  as you pulled in to the complex just off of the main road, so that's where everyone started when it came to giving directions.  Turn in at the little store and... draw the map from there.

One evening I answered the phone and heard this  very sexy guy voice on the other end saying: "I hear your bed is for sale, I would love to see it."

I knew there was only one person who fit that voice so I said: "I would love to show it to you, James."

We both laughed, he kicked in his regular voice and said: "I heard you were moving!  I feel bad that we never had time to come over to see you!  I am not sure the 'wife' would want a water bed but I would love to look at it!"

"Well, come on over" I laughed,  "it's soft and warm and ready to be comfortable".

He laughed and then said, "How do I get to your place?"

"Well", I said, "You turn in here, go two streets then do this and that."

"No problem!" he said. "I am a reporter! I have been to countries that don't even have a name! I can find you."

About an hour later I was beginning to wonder if everything was okay when the phone rang again.  This radio butter voice said: "I... am a reporter. I have traveled the world. I can NOT find your condo!"

I laughed and said in my best butter voice: "Where are you?"   Turns out he was at the market. We had it made.  I said, "you can walk from there, turn here, turn there, the bed is waiting."

Ten minutes later there was a knock on the door, and a handsome him was leaning on the door holding a bottle of champagne and two beautiful glasses.  "You have a bed", he said in his professional voice.

I couldn't stop laughing.  "Come in, professional bed shopper".

We went into the kitchen and poured ourselves some champagne and stood out on the outside deck enjoying the nice evening, laughing and talking, getting to know each other without any outside influences. It was so comfortable! No one expecting anything!  Think about it.  That is a rare moment in most lives and both of us were enjoying it.  Then he said: "I am ready to look at the bed".  So carrying our crystals of champagne, we went into the bedroom.

I had the bed made with a beautiful quilt, and small lamps... it looked very nice.  I said: '' Go ahead and lay down!"  He sat his glass on the headboard and sat carefully as the warm water swished and swooshed around. It took him a minute to get settled and then grinned:  "This is great! I have never been on one of these!"

I laughed: "It is super comfortable".

He looked at me and grinned: "I won't be in this bed alone, I have to know how it feels with someone on the other side."

"My pleasure!" I laughed, and carefully laid down on the other side still holding my champagne.

Gosh it was comfortable. He said: "I doubt anyone would believe any of this!"  We laid there and laughed, drank champagne and knowing that nothing else would ever happen,  we could just relax and enjoy the moment.  A kind, funny, loving, innocent, caring moment.

Think about the times when life gave you a moment  when everything was just right, when the aura was pure and simple and nothing bad existed.  Put those moments in a safe place in your brain and  embrace them when times feel sad. Fate never takes them away.  Surround yourself with the energy that will always be there.

James did not buy the bed.  A father came and got it for his college son a week later, but I have to believe the bed always held the energy of two, caring, kind people who enjoyed a few moments of their lives where the world stood still in a  perfect, innocent moment.

James has since crossed over, but I have no doubt he took that moment with him, too. Enjoy your sleep, James.  Memories are still alive and gentle, and mine.
