Life Stories By StarzAstroWand/"Driving Forces".

Driving Forces

I am sure we are born with a reason waiting for us. Every person does something in their lives that matters to someone else and affects their choices that affects the actions of another person etc. This is an early world. It started by chance. It does not really matter what a person chooses to believe, the fact is we are here, we are not as primitive as we once were, but nowhere near as advanced we could become if the Earth is able to survive our primitive stages... If we look at it realistically we see that the main reason behind every 'being' of every kind (plant or animal) is to propagate their species. If they have to eat something else to survive, they do. Each species develops a defense or escape, but when it's all said and done, we are alive to nurture the next generation. My point is, we may as well enjoy our blink of existence in this dimension. We all count; we all serve a purpose so why not learn and make the most of it!? It's time to not allow others to tell us how to feel about 'life' and ourselves. Every thing that has ever lived matters... think about it. Every thing contributes something. Us? Well, we work. Whatever it is we do, it counts as the work of survival in some manner. Why not enjoy it?

Some people are goers - they don't have what it takes to be still, or live in the same place or do the same work, or just accept their world as limited and 'okay'. The ones who 'go' are the ones who tell others what is out there in the world. The ones who stay have grown a crop and fixed dinner so they can sit and listen to the stories of the one-that-goes. Maybe the one-who-grows can make changes to improve the crops based on the information brought by the one-who-goes. Without this kind of association we would still be primitive. Accepting others for who they are is the basis of peace and our life. If we do no harm, life will go on. Keep in mind that others are as they are meant to be to keep all of us alive.

I cannot remember not knowing how to drive. Even as a small child I remember sitting on my father's lap as he was driving his big shiny car down the rural dirt roads. He made me feel 100% sure I was the one doing the driving (even though I saw his thumb on the bottom of the steering wheel) and he often said things like: "Always watch the road! Look to each side, remember what you see. How fast are you going? What is behind you? Pay attention!" I rode a bicycle from a very early age, was put behind the wheel of a tractor, put on horses, on anything that moved, and it appealed to me from day one. There is always somewhere to go, and something to see if you are a goer.

At 13 I was taught to drive a very small, old car with a three speed stick shift and was often driving down the road with my Mother in the passenger seat because she said I had to know how to drive since she had heart problems and if for some reason she was not able to drive, I could take over. I loved it. I was able to drive just about anything and when I took my drivers test on my 16th birthday the man sitting next to me started to laugh. He said: "I see you have had your 'license" for quite awhile."

I have driven all over all of the western American states, down roads that were not on any map. On named roads such as the Loneliest Road in America, on the road going past Area 51 in Nevada, and Chicken Dinner road in Idaho. I have met people I never would have known, and as a professional job seeker this is what opened all the doors for me! It always put me in the right place at the right time. An example was when my neighbor in Idaho asked me if I wanted to drive a dump truck and haul Sugar Beets. Are you kidding me!? Of Course I do! I have no idea why they took the chance of putting me behind the wheel of a huge dump truck driving in a field in the middle of nowhere Idaho along side a machine digging up and shooting out huge sugar beets that were landing in the back of my truck, but... they did! Okay so one of the beets hit my windshield and smashed it, and I took out a gate or two, I also learned to back the truck up a very narrow ramp, hit all the huge buttons to make the trailer rise up and dump the beets on a ramp leading up to a huge mountain of beets, put the back of the truck down, pull down into the lot, get out and climb up the back of the dump trailer to lock it into place, go into the office and give them my delivery ticket and get back in the truck and head back out into the fields.. I made about $200, took pictures, and added it to the list of "things I have done!"

Then there was the bus. I was living in a nice home in California with a nice person (that's another story) when a friend called and said she needed my help and would I come live with her and her husband for a while. I asked my nice person roomie if he wanted me to stay and he stood there looking at me, at the floor, out the window, back at me and said: "I don't know!" I laughed and said: "I will take that as a no." No hard feelings. We put romance behind us and remained very good friends for many many years, but it was apparent fate had sent the message it was time for me to be somewhere else. Load the car and off I go to Washington state. Once I got there my friend said: "I have a bus driving job for you out at the airport! But you need your DMV driving record!" Bus? Me? Heck, if I could drive a 15 ton dump truck why not a bus!? I pulled strings, and made calls and got the Driving Record, and in a few days my friend drove me to the airport.

It turns out the bus was one of those smaller shuttle buses that hotels and, in this case, a car rental agency used to transport people from the Airport to the rental lot. I rode around with an experienced driver for a few hours then tried it on my own. Not great... didn't have a wreck, but the driver decided he should not go home just yet. I walked in the office and said: "Give me the keys to one of those buses parked on the side of the lot, I need to practice." That practice meant driving around a huge lot of rental cars, expensive rental cars! The manager of the agency didn't even blink. He handed me the keys and went back into his office.

The bus was parked right in between two others, very close! I thought if I make it through backing this thing out, I probably should not have trouble avoiding hitting cars! I walked around the bus, I made mental notes of everything such as the big rear view mirrors, the bumper, how far the front went out, where the doors were. I walked around inside the bus and made a mental note of every tiny detail. I sat in the seat and handled the steering wheel and buttons and peddles and opened and closed the door. Then I started it up and listened to the motor, then put it in gear and rolled a few inches back and then forward. Pretty soon I backed slowly out of the parking place and began to drive very slowly around the car lot. I found a part of the lot that did not have many cars I drove around and around. I parked, pulled over, opened the doors, backed up. And after about an hour I pulled up in front of the agency and told the other driver: "let's take another trial run,"

He put a funky lawn chair right next to the drivers seat and said: "let's go!" I drove smoothly, pulled in and out, used the speaker to talk to the passengers who had just flown in from all over the world saying "we will be at the car lot in 2 minutes, thank you for your business" and delivered every customer to their car, smiled, then pulled up in front of the agency. The other driver had a big grin on his face. "I am going home!" And I was officially in a job I totally loved. Thank you fate...another interesting adventure to enjoy and another lesson: Don't rule anything out! The driving force of life comes in many forms.
