A Polish Shot

Being introduced into the working world at age 13 was one of the luckiest moments of my life. It may not have seemed so at the time, I was young and it was because my stepfather was nearly killed in an accident and we needed money, but from that moment on any time I applied for a job and was asked if I had any experience I could honestly say yes! I had handled merchandise, made change, dealt with customers, and was noted as an honest outgoing person. As a result I never had a problem finding a job. Many places were more than willing to train me to do what they needed which enabled me to add another thing to my list of 'experience'. Being a person who loves learning new things and who had a mother and father who had itchy feet, my being able to fit in just about anywhere enabled me to follow my own wanderlust when it reared up.

Which brings us to the guy from Polish. Way back 'in the day', movie theaters were very active parts of most towns in the USA. Most people counted on a theater for many things such as on a night out, having dinner, then going to see a nice new movie sitting in a warm dark environment that often times made it fun/easy/expected to, at the very least, lead to holding hands. Of course it often went further than that, but that's why every theater had ushers. The ushers were people dressed in an elaborate costume with a flashlite in their hands who lead people to a good place to sit, made sure everyone was quiet when they needed to be, paid close attention to the hand holding vibe so it didn't get carried too far, and anything else that might need attention in a dark room full of people. Most theaters ran movies all day Saturday to attract kids who were only charged 25 cents to spend all day sitting with their friends eating popcorn and watching movies! I have no doubt there were a lot of thankful parents, as well!

I was 18, attractive, had a small baby and a military husband who was shipped overseas for seven months. The military didn't pay much so a job was very necessary. Since I was lucky to have some relatives to help with babysitting, things were in order when I went to the local theater to apply for a job. This theater had a very small cafe up front which was not only open to the street, but also open to the inside of the theater. They not only sold popcorn and candy, they made hamburgers, hotdogs, sodas, sold pop, and milkshakes all done to order. I submitted an application and was called in for an interview.

The manager was a small blond man with a thick Polish accent and a very active, impulsive, excitable personality. After seeing my long blond hair and resume of 'experience', the job was mine. I was hired to do anything that was needed at the time... ushering, taking tickets, working in the little cafe, and making sure Bossman felt sure I thought he was handsome and funny. He was always immaculately dressed, hair combed, and had a way of looking at women that made it clear he was more than able to make it worth a woman's time to examine what he had to offer. I never once saw his wife and three kids, but to this day I feel sorry for her. Her little husband was excitable, impatient, had a rotten temper, and found something wrong with everything.

I was enjoying the job. Mr. Polish did not concern me since I had always been sure of myself and never intimidated by anyone for my entire life. I learned early that a female had to smile and 'imply' that she thought The-Man-In -Charge was smart and wonderfully handsome while she expertly found a way to draw a line that was never to be crossed. That still takes talent.

The days at work were fun. Cooking, visiting with people, watching good movies, and learning to speak fairly fluent Spanish since one day a week we ran only Spanish-speaking movies for our local Mexican population. They were good, hard working people and the theater was always full on Wednesday nights. One Wednesday night when I got done with work I stopped at the laundrymat to do a quick load of baby clothes on the way home. I was sitting out in the car just relaxing, leaving my purse in the laundry, when suddenly, out of nowhere, a gang of Mexican men surrounded my car yelling and hitting the car with their fists! Then all the sudden they started rocking the car from side to side trying to tip it over! I have no idea why this was happening! I started honking the horn to attract attention.

To this day I feel fate always kept an eye on me because just before they tipped over my car, the parking lot was suddenly invaded by cops! Later I found out a cop customer had seen the attack as he was driving by, zoomed over to the police department and activated every cop in town! I sat there amazed about the whole thing! I was a good person and felt appreciated by the Mexican population in town! The men who had attacked me were being grouped up in the parking lot and questioned. Then the cop came over to my car, grinned and said: "At the theater tonight these guys were standing in the lobby talking about doing something bad to a friend and right after that they heard you speaking fluent Spanish and somehow got the idea you heard them planning to do something not so good!" I was astounded! I got out of the car and yelled at them: "I don't speak Spanish that well! I only know how to take orders! I am not a threat!" I have to say the entire attitude of the local Mexican community changed for the better after that episode. All of them were friendly, caring, and for some reason took me into their lives! I still don't know why, but I never question fate when things work out for the better.

Work was still okay but Mr. Polish was being more and more aggressive with his making moves toward me. He acted frustrated and angry! He knew I was married but I have a feeling he was sure I would not be able to resist all his aggressive, handsome moves toward me.. He let it be known he had gotten a new ushers uniform for me, that he had done this and that for me and I should be 'grateful' ! I admit I was really not that well educated when it came to relationships and was becoming rather upset about his aggressive moves toward me. It was like he was trying to prove to me that he was worth my while!

It all came to a head one day when I was behind the counter in the cafe and saw a large rat race from the supply room to under the huge popcorn machine! I screamed! Mr. Polish Manager came running in saying: 'What's wrong!?" I pointed at the machine and said: " There's a RAT under there!" I stepped back as far as I could as Mr. Polish reached out, grabbed the side of the machine and with the instant strength of emergency he pulled the machine away from the wall exposing a huge rat huddled up with nowhere to run. The next instant I still, to this day, cannot believe, Little Polish pulled a huge pistol out of his jacket and SHOT, SHOT, SHOT the rat! Bullets were bouncing off of everything and unless they were hitting the very dead rat, they were hitting walls and chairs! My luck was still with me and somehow I was not hit by a bouncing bullet, but there was more than one thing that was dying in that moment, a rat and my job! Polish picked up the dead rat and walked out.

I finished my shift and walked out... forever. Later that night at home there was a bang at my door! It was Mr Polish! He barged in and said: "You can't quit! You must sleep with me! I saved you today!" I gotta say, it was good to know I didn't have anything to lose while I loudly chewed him out as I shoved him out my door. If he still had a gun, he evidently didn't think sex with a wounded blond would be that much fun. But he did drive off loudly yelling things... Polish thngs!
