Letter to a Friend

My dear friend, Koreen died. Before she did I sent her this letter to the hospital and it was read to her in her last moments of life, and again at her funeral.   We all need to make sure we let others know how we feel, that we love them. If we don't tell them, they may not know.  We are only here for a short time.  Always know what  you want, and always say it.

Hi Koreen, it’s Anita...

I hear you have been going thru a rough patch. Perhaps you need my letters more than ever. Perhaps you need to hear there is someone thinking of you and loving you and wishing you safe journeys and a peaceful heart. Maybe you need to hear that everything is okay that you don’t have to worry about anything; that  your tribe, your people are intact, walking their paths of destiny just as we are as we begin to fade in to our personal sunset.

I thought maybe you would like to hear how I remember you. How we became friends over 40 years ago when we were all young and funny and immortal. All the things we worried about are all gone, resolved, or were never all that important anyway. The children the village raised are strong and beautiful and productive and have propagated as nature intended. And their offspring are even more beautiful than the parents. We see that life has gone on, we have done our job, and now we can relax knowing it was a job well done.

You taught children. You were a grand influence on their lives and that imprint lasted them a life time. You taught me, too. We all teach each other without really realizing it, but I always have recalled with appreciation the lessons that came from you. I also recall the times you took care of us without a second thought. It was just what you did. You fed us soup when we had the flu, baked meatloaf and  Rhubarb pie when I got out of the hospital, took us on rides in your zippy little Mustang, produced my wedding reception with lovely boughs of blooming Dogwood and you were there countless other times with a smile, a hug and an encouraging word.

I want everyone to know we were not always old or infirm.  We were forces to be reckoned with! We were beautiful and vibrant and funny and we drank beer and laughed and did strange things like go see the sunrise at the beach (which was not easy considering we lived on the west coast). We loved and we lost.  We learned and we taught.  We made a difference. Whether it looks like it or not, we made a difference.

I want you to know I know the difference you made, and I want you to know I appreciate it. I want you to know that I will remind others of your contributions. And that I love you, my friend.  Safe journeys…
