During the Victorian era (and possibly before) there were many ways to "converse" without words   The many rules had to be memorized by both women and men so that there weren't any mixed signals   Here is a compendium of them compiled from a variety of sources.
 
With Gloves
 
Yes - Crushing up in the left hand or dropping one of them  
No - Crushing up in the right hand
I love you - Dropping both gloves
Do you love me? - Pulling on left glove, leaving thumb exposed
Kiss me - Pulling on right glove, leaving thumb exposed
Indifference - Pulling on left glove half way
I wish your acquaintance - Holding the gloves with finger tips down
Follow me - Striking them on the shoulder
I love another - Touching them to the chin
I am engaged - Throwing them up in the air
We are watched - Twisting around the fingers
I hate you - Turning them inside out
Introduce me to your friend - Fanning yourself with them
Get rid of your friend - Folding them up
I am vexed - Putting them away
I wish to be rid of your company - Biting the tips
I am satisfied - Holding them loose in the left hand/
Be contented - Holding them loose in the right hand
 
With a Handkerchief
 
Desirous of acquaintance - Drawing across the lips
I am sorry - Drawing across the eyes
You are too willing - Taking it by the centre
We will be friends - Dropping
Indifference - Twirling in both hands
I love you - Drawing it across the cheek
No - Letting it rest on the left cheek
I wish to be rid of you - Twirling it in the left hand
I love another - Twirling it in the right hand
I wish to speak with you - Folding it
We are watched - Drawing it across the fore head
Follow me - Over the shoulder
Wait for me - Opposite corners in both hands
You have changed - Placing it on the right ear
You are cruel - Letting it remain on the eyes
I am engaged - Winding around the forefinger
I am married - Winding it around the third finger

I love you - Running the finger around the crown
No - To wear on the right side of the head
Yes - To wear on the left side of the head
I wish to speak to you - To wear on the back of the head
We are watched - To incline toward the nose
I am married - Putting it behind you
I am single - Putting it in front of you
Follow me - Carrying it in the hand by the crown
Wait for me - Putting it under the right arm
I will be at the gate at 8 p m  - Putting it under the left arm
Does he accompany you? - Touching the brim to the lips

When can I see you? - Holding up the knife and fork in each hand
After the meal - Leaving knife and fork left of the plate
To-night - Clenching right hand on table
Yes - Napkin held with three fingers
No - Napkin held with two fingers
Cease signaling - Holding napkin to chin with forefinger to mouth
Can I meet you? - Standing knife and fork thus /\
Are you engaged to-night? - Balancing fork on edge of cup
I shall go out - Striking fork with knife
Meet me - Balancing fork on knife
Will you be alone? - Placing knife over the glass
Will you be late? - Stirring spoon in cup slowly
I don't understand - Slapping the ear, as if brushing away a fly
