Toothpaste is for More Than Teeth.

Aug 10, 2017

20 brilliant but little-known uses for ordinary old toothpaste from boredomtherapy.com.

While no family is exactly the same, there are some common household items that you are sure to find when you open up any kitchen cabinet. Baking soda and vinegar, for example, are two items that can be put to work to do so many different things around the house.

But there are other household staples that are just as useful hanging out right under your nose. You just have to know what you’re looking for, and once you’ve figured out what they can do you’ll never waste money on expensive brand name cleaners again.

For example, did you know that toothpaste works wonders for more than just your teeth? Believe it or not, it’s actually a really powerful cleaning agent that has so many other brilliant uses. Here are 20 of them!

1. Toothpaste is a great cleaning agent, which you probably already know. After all, it keeps your pearly whites nice and shiny each and every day! But it can do so much more. If your nails need a little bit more luster, for instance, apply a bit of toothpaste, buff, rinse away, and watch them gleam.

2. Silver is a truly beautiful metal. The only downside to having a hutch full of the stuff is the amount of time you will have to spend polishing it all to keep it free from tarnish. Toothpaste doubles as an ideal, non-toxic cleaning agent for silver, plus it will leave your precious metals smelling minty fresh!

3. Driving at night can be dangerous, even if you think you’ve got perfect night vision. Keeping your headlights clean is a helpful way of brightening the road ahead. You don’t need a specialty cleaning product either; just break out your toothpaste and an old toothbrush and you’re good to go!

4. Pianos are a wonderful addition to every home. Who doesn’t want their retreat from the world filled with beautiful music? Keep your piano keys as white as the day your piano was made by cleaning them gently with a little bit of toothpaste!

5. “Back at it again with the white Vans!” wouldn’t have made “Damn, Daniel” a household name without his signature bright kicks. White sneakers or dress shoes can turn anyone into a YouTube star… provided they know exactly how to keep them clean. That’s where a little bit of toothpaste comes in handy! Polish those babies with toothpaste for a white so bright you’ll need shades. Damn!

6. It’s a good idea to wear goggles if you like to swim in a pool. It’s an even better idea to keep said goggles properly cleaned! Chlorine and perspiration can add up to create one heck of a filmy buildup, but with a little bit of toothpaste, they’ll be as clear as crystal!

7. We all know that red wine pairs well with steak or a cheese plate. White tablecloths? Not so much. When wine spills, it has a tendency to soak into—and stain—any material. After blotting your spill with a towel, you can apply toothpaste to help work out the stain from almost any surface.

8. If you’ve ever had a pen explode in your purse, backpack, or even in your hand, then you already know just what an unpleasant mess that can make. To help get that ink out before it sets, treat the stains to a dab of toothpaste and wash as usual. It will be good as new!

9. Thanks to home hair-dye kits, it’s a snap to transform the way you look without ever having to go to a salon. However, accidents do happen, and if some of that dye winds up on your face instead of your hair, don’t worry! Toothpaste can be a great way of getting rid of it.

10. There’s nothing quite as cool as going barefoot or wearing sandals during a hot summer day. However, more exposed skin can mean more places for mosquitos to bite! Soothe those irritated stings with a little bit of toothpaste. You’ll be surprised at just how effective it can be!

11. Is there anything more frustrating than waking up to discover that you’ve developed a big ol’ pimple on your face overnight? Luckily, with a dab of toothpaste, you should be able to dry out that blemish quickly and get back to business as usual.

12. When you’re ironing, do you ever notice a little bit of discolored water seeping into your clothes? It’s not something we think about too often, but your iron really does need to be wiped down once in a while. When your iron is turned off, unplugged, and the surface is cool, wash it with a mix of toothpaste and water to make sure it’s nice and clean.

13. Most smartphones see a lot of action in the course of just one day. When you aren’t holding them up to your ear, chances are you’re poking and swiping at them with your oily fingers—ick! Use a little bit of toothpaste to get rid of that film of grease in no time flat.

14. There’s always that one pair of shoes we can’t seem to ever throw away, no matter how stinky they might get. Keep your sneakers smelling fresh by rubbing their insides with toothpaste before you toss them into the next load of wash.

15. Is there anything more dismal to clean up than a stain that has set in your carpet? No, there isn’t. Luckily, if you have a tube of toothpaste and a little bit of time, those stains will be a thing of a the past. Apply toothpaste, let it sit, and then wipe away the stain like magic.

16. If you spend your days working a rough job outdoors, then you know that real dirt likes to stick around… literally. It really can be impossible to get off of your skin. Next time, try a little bit of toothpaste. The exfoliating properties will scrub away that dirt and grease in less time than you’d think.

17. Carrying a thermos around is a surefire way to save money on coffee. However, if you happen to leave that thermos in the office overnight, it can take on a truly unfortunate aroma that regular soap just can’t cut through. The next time this happens, use toothpaste to make sure those bad smells stay gone!

18. Storing photographs and music on CDs is a great solution for your memories and favorite tunes. That said, if those discs ever get scratched, it can really leave you up the creek without a paddle! Not to fear: simply try polishing them with toothpaste. It acts as a filler, making it easier for the machine to read your damaged technology.

19. A freshly detailed car can make you feel like a new person! So when your slick ride gets scratched up, it can feel so deflating. Save yourself the money of yet another trip to the shop and get these scratches handled with a little bit of toothpaste! Who knew?

20. Got a poster you can’t wait to hang up on your wall, but you’re not too fond of the idea of punching holes in the walls with nails and thumbtacks? Using just a dab of toothpaste can actually work as a great temporary adhesive while you try and scope out a better option for the long term.
