Jan 15, 2017

Between timeanddate.com and nationaldaycalendar.com we learn that today is National Strawberry Ice Cream Day! . It is an unofficial holiday that celebrates ice cream made with strawberries or added strawberry flavors. The ice cream we know and love today evolved from ancient flavored ices. As early as 3000 BC, people in China served their guests sweet juices mixed with ice or snow.

While fruity ice cream flavors are still popular today, vanilla and chocolate are the clear favorites. According to a survey conducted by the International Ice Cream Association, strawberry is the third most popular ice cream flavor, favored by 5.3% of the population.

Strawberry Ice cream in a bag

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup half n half or milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbs of pureed strawberries (If you want plain vanilla, just leave out the strawberries)
  • 3 tbsp of sugar (possibly less if you prefer your ice cream less sweet)
  • ice
  • rock salt ***
  • gallon size Ziploc® bag
  • quart size Ziploc® bag
  • kitchen towel

Directions:

  1. Mix together the milk, cream, vanilla, sugar and strawberries in the quart size bag. Close the bag and be sure it is completely sealed. (Be careful not to get any strawberry puree in the “zippers”.)
  2. Fill the gallon size bag 3/4 the way full of ice and add about 1/4 cup of rock salt to the bag of ice.
  3. Place the smaller bag of ice cream ingredients into the larger gallon bag and seal the bag.
  4. Wrap the kitchen towel around the bag and get to shaking the bags like crazy for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the ice cream is ready.
  5. Open the bags carefully, you don’t want any ice water in your ice cream!
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy.

This fun and delicious little project is a tiny bit messy, so I do recommend doing it outside.  It’s so worth it, I promise!

*** Rock salt is available in the U.S. at stores like Walmart, Target, Ace Hardware.
