National Dress Up Your Pet Day .

Jan 14, 2017

According to pet360.com, January 14 is more than just a day on the calendar; It’s National Dress Up Your Pet Day!!! Founded in 2009 by celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal behaviorist, Colleen Paige, the day is sponsored by the Animal Miracle Network in order to celebrate pets and help to support the pet fashion community.

Growing up, who amongst us remembers taking the family dog on summer vacations, walking the aisles of pet-oriented superstores or reading about canine couture at week-long fashion events in big cities? Few amongst us can admit to engaging in such Fido fun years ago mostly because we, as a society, didn't embrace such notions. Now we National Dress Up Your Pet Day, and life is good, life is short, so I say celebrate.

Canine couture is all the rage. Dog fashion has become a multimillion dollar industry, and like it or not, it seems it is here to stay. Whether dogs need to wear clothes or not is a completely separate debate, but in many cases, yes indeed dog apparel makes sense.

In fact, New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology, one of the world’s leading higher education facilities of fashion design, has successfully created and launched a program in pet product design and marketing. Born as the brainchild of Professor Janet Brav and Assistant Professor Deborah David and developed to serve the growing pet fashion and marketing industry, courses are quickly selling out.

The American Pet Products Association reveals that an estimated $50.84 billion dollars was spent on pets in the United States in 2011, with fashion and high-styling products for discriminating pooches a huge part of that number. According to the APPA’s latest statistics, some of the latest trends in fashion have completely gone to the dogs. Fashion “must haves” include faux minx coats, lumberjack vests for manly machos, plaid jackets, matching jeweled and leather collar and leash sets, and even holiday outfits for the perfect get together attire.

So should we dress our dogs up in apparel to celebrate? A few tips to keep in mind:

-Never force a dog to wear clothing

-If a dog is uncomfortable, remove clothing immediately

-Try to get your dog accustomed to clothes by allowing him or her to walk around the house in the clothing for 5 minutes and then reward.

-Check for any elastic banding, snaps, or zippers that might irritate or hurt a dog’s skin

-Get an accurate size for your dog’s clothing so there is no discomfort

-Watch for overheating; dogs can overheat quickly
